Cardio-Oncology

Cardio-oncology is a new and growing field that offers more help—and more hope

Treating heart problems for cancer patients

Cancer patients enjoy higher survival rates and are living longer post-cancer than ever before. Good news, except that some cancer treatments can cause heart complications, make existing conditions worse, and can even create long-term damage. That’s where the growing field of cardio-oncology can help.

The goal of cardio-oncology is to prevent—and, if possible, reverse—any adverse cardiovascular side effects from cancer treatment. UCHealth is proud to be at the forefront of this new field, which includes staffing Colorado’s only fellowship-trained cardio-oncologist.

About cardio-oncology

Certain types of cancer drugs, chemotherapy and radiation treatments (particularly administered to the left chest) can cause or lead to coronary artery disease,  congestive heart failure, arrhythmia, high blood pressure or other cardiovascular events. This means many cancer patients and survivors need cardiac treatment as part of their personalized treatment plan.

For current cancer patients, we want to keep any cardiac issues from interfering with successful cancer treatment. We closely monitor and identify heart trouble as early as possible.

For survivors, we want to help ensure that a cancer-free life is also a heart-healthy life, so we employ the most advanced approaches possible.

Our cardio-oncology team treats heart problems for patients with:

  • All solid tumors like breast cancer, lung cancer and GI cancer.
  • All blood cancers including leukemia, lymphoma and multiple myeloma.
  • Melanoma.
  • Bone marrow transplants.

In addition to treating current cancer patients, our team treats survivors of both adult and childhood cancer.

We work with survivors of childhood and adult cancer, as well as current cancer patients who are experiencing heart complications, develop cardiac conditions or have existing cardiovascular disease. To help ensure the best outcome for each patient, we take a multidisciplinary approach to each care plan, working collaboratively with your primary care provider, oncologist, radiation oncologist and surgeon. We also participate in clinical trials, including Phase I cancer trials.

We can offer you:

  • Cardiac risk assessment.
  • Stress tests.
  • Cardiac ultrasound.
  • Personalized strategies for optimal heart health.
  • Cardiac rehabilitation.
  • Treatment of medicine-resistant high blood pressure.
  • Nutrition counseling.
