Aurora, Colo. (August 8, 2017) – U.S. News & World Report has again elevated University of Colorado Hospital’s (UCH) ranking on its list of the nation’s best hospitals. This year, UCH has earned the position of No. 15 on the annual U.S. News Best Hospitals Honor Roll, moving up five positions from last year’s ranking. The hospital is also ranked No. 1 in Colorado.

“We are excited about this national ranking as it reflects the high quality care that our doctors, nurses and staff show our patients each and every day,” said UCHealth President and CEO Elizabeth Concordia. “Quality health care is important. UCHealth’s patients are 26 percent more likely to survive their illness, and they are receiving safer care compared to the national average. This means every day, patients are able to go home, stay healthy, and get back to living their extraordinary lives.”

University of Colorado Hospital is nationally ranked in 11 specialties, including a No. 1 ranking in pulmonology (lung and respiratory care), a distinction UCH shares with National Jewish Health.

  • Pulmonology
  • Kidney disorders
  • Cancer
  • Orthopedics
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology
  • Gynecology
  • Gastroenterology & GI Surgery
  • Cardiology & Heart Surgery

U.S. News also recognized the specialty of Rheumatology as “high performing.”

“I’d like to thank our nurses, staff, and the excellent providers from the University of Colorado School of Medicine because this national honor is a direct result of their excellent patient care,” said University of Colorado Hospital President and CEO Will Cook.

As Colorado’s only adult academic medical center, University of Colorado Hospital provides clinical trials and innovative treatments through a strong partnership with the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. Faculty from the CU School of Medicine are renowned experts in their fields and drive the quality recognized by the U.S. News rankings.

UCH is the academic anchor of UCHealth, a nonprofit health care system that includes seven hospitals and more than 100 clinics throughout Colorado. U.S. News also ranks UCHealth’s hospitals in northern Colorado, Poudre Valley Hospital and Medical Center of the Rockies, among the top 10 hospitals in Colorado.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in its 28th year, are designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures. The U.S. News methodologies include risk-adjusted survival and readmission rates, volume, patient experience, patient safety, quality of nursing care and other care-related indicators.

“Just 152 hospitals, or about 3 percent of the more than 4,500 hospitals we evaluated, were nationally ranked in even one specialty,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “The top 20 hospitals that were highlighted on this year’s Honor Roll have delivered outstanding care and offer deep expertise spanning multiple specialties.”
