EMS education
A call to 911 sets in motion responses from EMS, police, and fire departments. The quick, expert care provided to injured persons by emergency medical services (EMS) personnel can be the difference between lives lost and lives saved.
Poudre Valley Hospital Paramedic Program
The UCH Poudre Valley Hospital Paramedic Program operates in a “flipped classroom” format. Students will learn much of the content outside of class with a well-researched and evidence-based curriculum meeting or exceeding the National EMS Education Standards.
In-person class time is predominantly used to practice and apply these skills with skill practice, scenarios, immersive simulations, and discussion.
Concurrent with the didactic instruction, students gain valuable experience a variety of clinical opportunities:
- Level I Trauma Center Emergency Department
- Labor and Delivery Unit
- Cardiac Cath Lab
- ICU / CICU
- Community Medic
- Psychiatric
- Operating Room
- Medical Director Physician Shadows
While no paramedic program is easy, the UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital program and overall student experience maximizes flexibility for the students within the context of a structured program.

Poudre Valley Hospital Program Accreditation
The UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital Paramedic program has been issued a Letter of Review by the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). This letter is NOT a CAAHEP accreditation status, it is a status signifying that a program seeking initial accreditation has demonstrated sufficient compliance with the accreditation standards through the Letter of Review Self-Study Report (LSSR) and other documentation. Letter of Review is recognized by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) for eligibility to take the National Registry’s Paramedic credentialing examination(s). However, it is NOT a guarantee of eventual accreditation.

Program fees and associated costs
Poudre Valley Hospital Costs
The UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital Paramedic program is offered at minimal cost to the students. Poudre Valley Hospital EMS is responsible for the following:
- Tuition
- Clinical site fees
- Textbooks
- LMS fees
- Uniforms
- Ancillary curricular tools
- Certifications (BLS, ACLS, PALS, PHTLS, Difficult Airway)
Anticipated student costs
The paramedic program includes several direct and indirect costs to the student. Direct costs include transportation costs to clinical sites and a personal computer capable of accessing course materials. Most clinical sites are within a 30-minute drive of Windsor Headquarters and course materials are accessible on a wide variety of operating systems and laptops.
Indirect costs are often associated with reduced availability for overtime shifts while enrolled in the paramedic program. Students should plan one day of class and 2-3 clinicals per week during the didactic portion of the course. This may reduce time and mental bandwidth for overtime shifts.
We acknowledge that overtime is often a fixture in EMS. Students that are concurrently UCH EMS employees remain eligible for overtime shifts per UCH and Poudre Valley Hospital EMS policies and mandatory rest periods.
Academic schedule
Cohorts are divided into January and July start dates with didactic / clinical and field internships following the calendar below. Please not that some factors may influence the timelines for the didactic/clinical phase and/or field internship and the program reserves the right to adjust as needed to meet program requirements.

Didactic/classroom schedule
In-person classes meet every Wednesday from 0800 – 1700. The classes will not be held for major holidays (New Year’s Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day). Students should still expect homework assignments during these weeks.
Clinic location and scheduling
All clinical sites are located within 30min of UCH EMS Windsor Headquarters.
Students should expect 2-3 clinicals per week during the didactic phase. Clinicals are scheduled in collaboration with the host facilities, teams, and units and may fall on major holidays.
Internship assignments
Students will complete a minimum of 500 field internship hours with an assigned preceptor at UCHealth EMS. The internship must be completed within 4 months of the start of the internship.
