About therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound

What is therapeutic endoscopy?

A specially trained doctor uses a flexible tool called an endoscope with a camera, a light and other tools attached to the end. These tools allow the doctor to not only look inside the digestive system of a person’s body but to also treat conditions when/if they are found. Therapeutic endoscopy is the medical term used to describe this type of procedure.

What is endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)?

A very small ultrasound device is placed on the end of an endoscope. During a EUS, a doctor takes ultrasound images and video of the inside of the digestive system. While the video records what is being seen, the ultrasound device uses sound waves to create other images and send them to a video monitor that the doctor and his staff watch. Some endoscopes have a needle at the end. The needle can be used to take small samples of tissue or fluids. The tissue or fluid is then sent to the lab for testing.
