Dr. Garrett’s areas of clinical expertise include treating degenerative disorders of the spine with minimally invasive spine surgery, including cervical discectomy, and artificial disc replacement, spinal deformity and scoliosis correction surgery, including minimally invasive anterior, lateral and posterior approaches; tumors of the brain, spine and pituitary gland, including awake surgery and surgery for eloquent brain region tumors, Shunts/CSF diversion procedures, idiopathic intracranial hypertension, Chiari malformations, skull lesions, head trauma and vascular malformations e.g. aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and cavernomas.

Research interest for patients

Dr. Matthew Garrett, M.D., Ph.D., received his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. He completed his neurosurgical residency and doctoral fellowship at UCLA, where he received numerous grants and awards from the National Institute of Health (NIH), American Academy of Neurosurgeons (AANS) and Congress of Neurosurgeons (CNS) for his groundbreaking research in the field of neuroscience. Dr. Garrett has been a clinical investigator on five research trials and has authored over forty peer-reviewed publications. He has lectured at national neurosurgery conferences and at leading neurosurgical training programs including Johns Hopkins and UCSF. His research interests include using advanced DNA sequencing techniques to tailor patient-specific therapies.
