Day of surgery

  • Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes.
  • Leave jewelry and valuables at home, including watches and money.

  • A responsible adult over the age of 18 must drive you to and from your procedure and remain with you for 24 hours if you will be receiving any sedation or anesthesia for your surgery or procedure.
When you arrive

After you check in at the registration desk, your pre-operative registered nurse will take you to the pre-operative area. Here they will review your health history, medications, previous surgeries, check your blood pressure, heart rate and temperature, start an IV and answer your questions about your procedure and after-care.

Your surgical team including your surgeon and operating room staff will visit with you to sign your surgical consent, mark the site of surgery and to make sure you are well prepared for your procedure.

Your anesthesiologist and CRNA will see you in the pre-op area, review your health history, sign your anesthesia consent, answer your questions and take you to the operating room.

A friend or family member may stay with you until you go into the operating room area.

Immediately prior to your surgery

You are the most important person in the operating room. Your comfort and safety are our top priority.

The operating room nurse will greet you and assist you onto the table, make you comfortable and apply monitors. The nurse will stay with you throughout your procedure.

After your surgery

When your surgery is completed you will be taken to the recovery unit, also known as the PACU, where a nurse will apply monitors, check dressings, check the IV site, monitor vital signs and administer pain medication as needed.

You will experience some discomfort after surgery. The amount and type of discomfort varies, based on your perception of pain and your procedure. We will customize your pain management to meet your needs.

Your family member will be able to be with you as soon as your vital signs are stable and you are awake. As soon as you feel like drinking and/or eating, the nurse will offer you something to drink and/or eat.

When you are ready to go home, the nurse will go over your individualized discharge instructions. It is important that you and your family member understand the directions for your care after your surgery. The next business day after surgery, a nurse will call you to check on your progress.

You will not be able to drive or return to work on the day of your surgery if you had any sedation or anesthesia.
