Our primary care, urgent care, emergency rooms, specialty clinics and hospitals are open and safe. As we schedule appointments, we are taking every precaution possible to ensure it’s safe to see your doctor while receiving the highest level of care.
To meet the needs of our community, UCHealth is offering both the COVID-19 nasal swab test, which detects the presence of the virus, and the blood test, which measures for the presence of antibodies. Using My Health Connection (patient portal), new and existing patients can request an order for either test.

How we are keeping our patients safe:
- All patients and visitors are required to wear masks.
- Our cleaning methods exceed national health care standards, and clinic rooms, check-in desks and equipment are being cleaned between every patient visit.
- Chairs and tables in our waiting rooms and cafeterias are re-spaced to ensure physical distancing.
- A limited number of people are allowed in elevators.
- Every patient admitted to a UCHealth hospital is tested for COVID-19
- Depending on the surgery or procedure, some patients will be directed to a location where they can be screened and tested for COVID-19 prior to their surgeries.
- To keep you safe, UCHealth is now covering the cost of postage for patients with recurring prescriptions.
- For safety reasons, visitors are allowed under limited conditions.
Emergency rooms and urgent cares are safe
Delaying care for an emergency medical condition can be dangerous. Our hospitals, emergency rooms and urgent cares are safe, so please don’t hesitate to get the right care when you have a serious medical emergency or need to be seen at an urgent care clinic.
Scheduling your appointment
Our scheduling staff will coordinate with the clinic’s medical team to determine if it is best to have an in-person visit or conduct your appointment using a Virtual Visit based on your condition and/or symptoms. In many cases, our providers are able to meet with you through Virtual Visit and can provide you with a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
If an in-person follow up appointment or referral to a specialist is needed, our staff will help coordinate this for you.
Medically necessary procedures and surgeries
- UCHealth has a team of medical experts who have created a plan to slowly and safely begin to offer non-emergency surgeries, beginning with patients who have the most urgent needs.
- We are closely monitoring staffing, equipment, available rooms and supplies to ensure the safety of our patients, staff and providers.
- Depending on the surgery or procedure, some patients will be directed to a location where they can be tested for COVID-19.

How has UCHealth determined that it is now safe to start scheduling surgeries or procedures?
Throughout our COVID-19 pandemic response, UCHealth has continued to perform vital surgeries and procedures for patients when a delay might cause harm to the patient. Our doctors have been weighing the risk of delay with the benefit of moving forward with the plan for care. This has been done with advice from experts who care for patients with complex health needs and in infection prevention and control.
Should I postpone my surgery because of COVID-19?
As with any planned surgery or procedure, you and your doctor should weigh the risk of delay with the benefit of having your surgery sooner. UCHealth and health systems across the nation will likely be affected by COVID-19 for many months to come. It is best to talk with your doctor about your care needs and surgery timing.
If you have been called to set up your surgery or procedure, your doctor feels the benefits of doing your surgery outweigh the risks of coming to the hospital. If you want to know if you can delay your surgery until a later date, talk with your doctor to see if this is safe for you.
Will I be safe in the hospital if UCHealth is treating COVID-19 patients?
Our infection prevention processes are aimed at protecting our patients and visitors as well as doctors, providers and staff. All patients, visitors and staff are required to wear a face-covering or mask that covers their nose, mouth and chin at all times while at UCHealth to guard against transmission of COVID-19. Any type of surgical or cloth mask from home is fine. Masks with release valves are not allowed and should be covered or replaced with an approved mask. Your surgery may be cancelled if you choose not to wear a mask when entering our facilities. Masks can prevent the spread of infection to others. Across UCHealth we have units being used to care for patients with COVID-19. These patients are kept in special isolation for their own safety and to protect other patients, providers and staff.
Can I still get medical and surgical care while the safer at home order is in effect?
UCHealth and your providers are able to offer routine medical telehealth visits for times when you are not able to come into the clinic. This lets you talk with your provider through a video chat to get care and advice. The first step to setting this up is to open a My Health Connection account at uchealth.org/myhealthconnection. You can then call your provider’s clinic to set up the visit.
If you have a medical emergency, you should call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency Department.
What can I expect prior to my surgery?
We strongly encourage all patients to stay at home for at least seven days prior to their surgery date. This is to prevent potential exposure to you, visitors and our staff. We will contact you by phone at a minimum of seven days in advance of any testing prior to your surgery. Testing should be completed 3-5 days prior to surgery. It is encouraged that patients test during their scheduled date and time to allow appropriate time for results. Any patients who have not been tested or have pending results will likely have their procedures cancelled.
Why do I need to be tested if I don’t have symptoms?
We require that patients be tested for COVID-19 at 3-5 days before their scheduled procedure or surgery. This is to ensure the safety of patients, visitors and all of our staff. Patients who do not get the required testing may have their surgery or procedure delayed or cancelled.
What can I expect the day of my surgery?
Please go to registration upon arriving. You may bring up to 2 support persons. Your support person(s) should also wear a mask from home. All patients and visitors will be screened for COVID-19 symptoms and temperature checks before being allowed to enter the facility.
Please note that your support person(s) may accompany you to the preoperative area where space allows. However, they will not be allowed to visit you in the recovery area. Your support person(s) may wait in the waiting room. If you have to be admitted post-surgery, you may have 2 visitors per day during visiting hours.
How does COVID-19 affect my recovery from surgery?
We want to do your surgery or procedure in the safest possible way. One of our health care team members will call you ahead of time to ask you about possible signs of COVID-19. We want to make sure we do any surgery or procedure at a time when you are in the best health to recover and get the most benefit. We will encourage you to limit your exposure to other people during the days leading up to your surgery or procedure.
Please let us know if you have had close contact with someone who is known or thought to have COVID-19 (such as a household member or caregiver). We may need to adjust or change your care plans because of this.
Can my family or friends come to the hospital on the day of surgery, or to visit me in general?
Visiting hours are from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. For the safety of our patients, providers and staff, patients may have 1-2 visitors per day in certain preoperative areas where space allows. Only 2 visitors are allowed per day on inpatient units. No children under the age of 16 years are allowed to visit patients in the hospital. Patients may bring a child under the age of 16 to clinic visits only. A support person for any procedure needs to be of legal age to drive. These rules are in place to protect your family, and follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). We require all visitors to wear their own personal masks into our health care facilities. Any type of surgical or cloth mask from home is fine. Masks must cover the nose, mouth and chin and be worn at all times. Masks with release valves are not allowed and should be covered or replaced with an approved mask.
In any case where visitors are allowed, visitors must be checked for symptoms of COVID-19. Those with concerns for the virus will not be allowed to visit. Visitors who are suspected of having the virus will be given information on how to care for themselves and how to help stop the spread to others.
Does the current COVID-19 situation change how long I stay after my surgery or procedure?
While coming to the hospital for your surgery or procedure is safe, we will work with you to discharge you from the hospital as soon as it is safe to. Your clinical teams will work with you to prepare for any needs you may have after your surgery or procedure. This may include:
- A ride home.
- Support during your recovery.
- A place to go to after your procedure.
Our goal is to keep you in the hospital until your health is strong enough for you to safely leave. If you have issues that need to be addressed before your surgery or procedure, please contact your care team before coming to the hospital. This will help ensure a smooth transition out of the hospital afterward.
