My approach to patient care is team-based, with my patients being the most important members of their spine health care team. By involving primary care physicians, pain management specialists, nonoperative spine care providers, psychologists, physical therapists and alternative treatment specialists like chiropractors and acupuncturists, I aim to deliver holistic care to my patients in order to improve their outcomes. Spine surgery can be extremely effective at alleviating patients’ symptoms, but it should be used when other treatment options are ineffective. When counseling patients prior to surgery, I work hard to understand their individual treatment goals and I strive to use evidence, as well as patient preference to tailor their treatment plan to those goals. I use a wide variety of gold standard and innovative techniques to provide durable improvements in pain and function while minimizing each patients’ individual risk.

I grew up in Southern Ontario and completed all of my medical training in Canada. I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree (2003) and Medical Degree (2006) from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario. As a result of undergoing three knee surgeries to treat injuries sustained while playing competitive volleyball, I chose to pursue a career in orthopaedic surgery. In order to remain close to family and friends, I stayed at McMaster to complete my orthopaedic surgery residency (2011). The ability to treat all types of spine disorders in a wide variety of patients, the amazing anatomy of the spine, and the complexity of spine surgeries are what inspired me to complete three years of fellowship training in complex adult spine surgery, one at the University of Calgary and two at the University of Toronto. For the last five years I have been blessed to be a member of the orthopaedic surgery faculty at the University of Missouri in Columbia, MO. In 2017, as one of the American Orthopaedic Association’s North American Traveling Fellows, I was fortunate to meet the spine surgeons at the University of Colorado, and it was the friendly, supportive, collaborative environment in which they worked, as well as the opportunity to take on a leadership position, that led to my relocation to Colorado Springs.

I am board certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and as a result of my fellowship training in both orthopaedic and neurosurgical spine surgery am comfortable managing all types of spine disorders and performing surgery on all regions of the spine. My training in public health has allowed me to be a productive researcher and I am a volunteer member of several committees for AOSpine North America and the North American Spine Society. In 2018 I was honored to be recognized as one of NASS SpineLine’s Top 20 Under 40 for spine care providers in the United States.

During my free time I enjoy reading, watching movies and spending time with friends and my adorable dog Ellie. I also love to knit and crochet and to get outside on my motorcycle. Travel is one of my passions and I have been fortunate to visit some amazing places, including Argentina, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. However, my favorite trips are to Canada to visit my family.
