About our program

The UCH inpatient pharmacy internship builds on knowledge foundations obtained through Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) coursework. Interns can expect to work alongside clinical pharmacists to gain valuable experience including, but not limited to, chart review, kinetics monitoring, medication education, pharmacy consults, and other things as they arise. Additionally, interns will have list of projects, MUEs, and research available to choose from and work on longitudinally throughout the internship.


Program information

Duration: Upon hire, interns are expected to work through completion of their PharmD
​Number of ​​positions: 15 total (5-6 positions each year)

Staffing requirements

Hiring for P2 interns takes place in the spring of P1 year. Students are expected to start orientation and training in June, and work full time throughout the summer prior to the start of their P2 year.

Staffing during the academic year consists of:

  • One weekday evening clinical shift (~5 hours)
  • Two shifts every other weekend: Clinical and technical coverage (~8 hours)

Holiday staffing requirements:

  • One major holiday (Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s)
  • One minor holiday (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day)
P2 experiences

Summer

  • Start date roughly June 1.
  • Training for technician shifts and then working them (IV room and triage).
  • End of summer – floor training (anti-coag, kinetics).
  • Projects assigned and mentor pharmacist for the project identified
    • When your project is complete, it is up to you to communicate this so a new project and project mentor can be identified
    • Types of projects are MUEs, or research projects

Fall

  • Pharmacist A and B assigned annually.
  • Following levels/kinetics.
  • Counseling for patients on select inpatient units on the medications being prescribed to them while in the hospital.
  • Anticoagulation teaching.
  • AMS work
    • Making sure all tier 1 antibiotics have an ID consult and all tier 2 antibiotics are communicated to the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist through the handoff tool
  • Complete patient renal reviews assessing ongoing renal function changes and subsequent dose and medication adjustments.
  • Med room audits/unit support.

Spring

  • Continue with the same pharmacist from the fall for following their schedule.
  • Training for CHF counseling (over winter break).
  • Following levels/kinetics.
  • Anticoagulation teaching.
  • Counseling for patients on select inpatient units on the medications being prescribed to them while in the hospital.
  • Med room audits.
  • Renal reviews for the pharmacist buddy and if completed can solicit other evening pharmacists who may need help.
  • AMS work
    • Making sure all tier 1 antibiotics have an ID consult and all tier 2 antibiotics are communicated to the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist through the handoff tool
  • Profile review training for medicine or surgical services only.
P3 experiences

Summer/Fall

  • CHF counseling (over winter break).
  • Following levels/kinetics.
  • Anticoagulation teaching.
  • Counseling for patients on select inpatient units on the medications being prescribed to them while in the hospital.
  • Med room audits.
  • Renal reviews for the pharmacist buddy and if completed can solicit other evening pharmacists who may need help.
  • AMS work.
    • Making sure all tier 1 antibiotics have an ID consult and all tier 2 antibiotics are communicated to the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist through the handoff tool
  • Profile review training for medicine or surgical services only.
  • Training for P2s.  

Spring

  • Transition to critical care area for evening shift responsibilities.
  • Renal reviews for new admits.
  • Kinetics.
  • Transplant post-op notes and Transplant counseling prn
  • Answer the phones.
  • Patients own medications.
  • CRRT ivents and other ivents.
  • Urgent pyxis refills.
  • AMS work.
    • Making sure all tier 1 antibiotics have an ID consult and all tier 2 antibiotics are communicated to the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist through the handoff tool
  • Anticoagulation teaching.
  • Fall/Delirium consults.
  • Go to responses and serve as runners and help with drug prep at the bedside
    • Refill the code trays after a code
P4 experiences

Summer/Fall/Spring

  • ICU shifts start (5 hours Saturday and Sunday).
  • Anticoagulation teaching.
  • Code response/RRT response.
  • Answer phones.
  • Review of septic patients.
  • CRRT reviews.
  • Kinetics.
  • Renal reviews.
  • AMS work
    • Making sure all tier 1 antibiotics have an ID consult and all tier 2 antibiotics are communicated to the antimicrobial stewardship pharmacist through the handoff tool

Applicants must be a current PharmD student with an active intern license in the state of Colorado. The application deadline is April 15.
