The ERAS program

ERAS stands for Enhanced Recovery After Surgery. The ERAS program is a multimodal care pathway designed to accelerate recovery. In addition to returning patients to their normal health quickly, ERAS programs can reduce the amount of pain experienced post-operatively, help prevent surgical site infections and reduce the risk of complications.

Patients undergoing a hysterectomy, hip or knee replacement or colorectal surgery at UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital will be offered to be a part of our ERAS program.

Patients will receive education from the surgeon and the pre-admission clinic on the ERAS program and the specific pathway for their surgery. These instructions will include information on nourishment before and after surgery, early mobility and pain management.

Our bariatric surgery program

Our program is the only weight loss surgery program in Boulder County and conveniently located at Longs Peak Hospital.

Our goal is to provide surgical weight loss options to those who have struggled to lose and failed to maintain significant weight loss with diet and exercise alone. The program provides multidisciplinary services including dieticians experienced in managing bariatric surgery patients.

Weight loss surgery is offered to those who have been unsuccessful in losing significant weight and keeping that weight off with diet and exercise alone along with having a BMI (weight to height ratio) above 40 or above 35 with a medical problem associated with being overweight. We will evaluate your medical history and help guide you to the surgery that will work best for your specific needs.

Patients can expect to visit with our physicians 3-6 times prior to surgery over several months. This allows thorough education and support prior to the biggest event that someone struggling with their weight can make about their future health. Patients also regularly visit us after surgery for the follow up visits. We are committed to helping you obtain your goals in becoming a healthier you and will be with you for the entire process.

Services provided

  • Laparoscopic Roux en Y Gastric bypass (RNYGB).
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy.
  • Management of patients who already have a lap band placed including office evaluations, band fills, removing fills and surgical removal of the band.

Your appointment

If your doctor has referred you for surgery or a procedure at UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital, your doctor’s office will typically schedule a pre-admission appointment for you. To provide you with the highest quality in health care, we require all patients undergoing elective procedures with anesthesia to be screened in our pre-admission clinic. This is to prevent any delays or cancellations on the day of surgery and to identify and provide optimization of your health prior to your procedure.

Call 720.718.1408 to schedule your pre-admission appointment if your doctor’s office has not done so already.

During this appointment:

  • A registered nurse will review your health history, medication and any other pertinent information related to your upcoming procedure.
  • The nurse will provide education on when to stop eating and drinking, medications, required pre-op showering and specific instructions based on your health history and procedure.
  • Any lab work or testing may be completed at this appointment.
