As a hospitalist, it is of the utmost importance to keep up to date with the ever-evolving and shifting landscape of medicine. We must be prepared to effectively diagnose and take part in the treatment of diseases involving any part of the body.
Beyond this, I strive to always put the patient first. I firmly believe that the best treatment plans are only effective if the patient understands their disease process and the reasoning behind their treatment. Clear and effective communication is one of the primary pillars of safe and effective hospital medicine, and in many cases can be just as important as a strong fund of medical knowledge. The patient’s treatment does not stop once they leave the hospital, and I make it a priority to assure that the communication between the multiple members and specialties of the care team is equally effective.
As the practice of medicine becomes more and more complex for clinicians, we must understand that the patient and their family are experiencing a similar level of complexity as they progress through a hospital course defined by an often-times overwhelming volume of various subspecialists, diagnostic tests, procedures and new medications. It is our job to help the patient and their family navigate this journey and ensure safe and effective continuity of care.
