My approach to medical care was formulated during my third year of medical school. At that time, I realized that I felt honored and responsible when patients came to me for help in addressing their health problems. I therefore listen very carefully to the details of their clinical history, focusing so that I do not miss important details while asking pertinent questions in order to better guide our interaction and to uncover additional information. I then conduct a focused physical examination, targeting organ systems that may play a role in their medical symptoms.
I use the information gained from their medical history and physical examination to establish a differential diagnosis for their signs and symptoms. I may then order additional testing to establish a final diagnosis. I am very conscious of the inconvenience and cost of unnecessary testing, and I therefore avoid doing excessive numbers of tests that are unlikely to contribute to either the diagnosis or management of my patients.
Finally, I practice Western evidence-based medicine, utilizing therapies that have been carefully researched and shown to be effective with minimal risk. I then follow up with patients to establish that their therapy is helpful with minimal side effects.
I moved to Denver in 1980 after finishing medical school to do my internal medicine residency. I then moved to Oklahoma to do a critical care fellowship, but I missed Colorado. I returned to Denver and completed pulmonary and sleep fellowships. I then had a 20-year career in academic medicine but realized that patient care gave me the greatest satisfaction in the academic arena. I therefore opened my own private practice for another 10 years, focusing on sleep medicine with a component of general pulmonary medicine. 10 years ago, I joined Colorado Pulmonary Intensivists, and I am now excited to become a member of the UCHealth Medical Group.
I live west of Denver with my wife of 50 years and my Springer Spaniel, Mick. I try to spend as much time as possible outdoors and in the mountains, hiking in the warm months and snowshoeing in the winter. My adult children have also settled in Denver, so I get to spend as much time as possible with my grandchildren! I can’t imagine a better place to live than Colorado!
