The most common diseases in today’s America are the so-called “lifestyle” diseases, in which diet and exercise play a large role. I have an educational, collaborative approach to health care, and I emphasize healthy diet, regular exercise, and other healthy lifestyle choices, such as quitting smoking and wearing seatbelts. I see myself as a cheerleader or coach, whose job it is to educate and motivate patients about diet and exercise, cheering their successes, and not to scold them.

I like to involve a patient as a partner in all phases of their treatment, discussing the advantages and disadvantages of the various options. I am firmly grounded, however, in the principles of evidence-based treatment and I won’t hesitate to prescribe medication if the patient would benefit from them. I’m not afraid to say “I don’t know” and to order various diagnostic tests or to refer to experts in the various medical fields to assist with management.

This approach takes time, and I’m a bit of a perfectionist and I like to give each problem the focus and attention it deserves, and therefore discourage the evaluation and management of several problems in one visit. A patients’ problems are too important to deal with them hastily and in passing.

I like people and I like getting to know them over time, helping them live long, healthy lives. I like science and am fascinated by the latest developments in medicine. I enjoy reading medical studies and journals, not just as a duty, but out of sheer curiosity and interest.
