I have been a nurse practitioner since 1996. In my first year of practice a colleague advised, “If you let the patient talk long enough they will tell you what is wrong with them.” I took this to heart and developed my practice around this belief.
I believe my best tool in patient care is my ability to listen to what my patients have to say and to really hear them – to understand their concerns and ideas. Also, I strongly feel that patients have a say in their care.
When interacting with a patient, my goal is to give them all the information they need to make the best decision for themselves. This involves providing them with all the pros and cons of their options and giving them the opportunity to help guide their care. This approach has made my career enjoyable and fulfilling.
I have been happily married since 1999. My “child” is my wonderful Labrador Retriever, Sadie.
