Dressed in a classic schoolgirl plaid jumper, Olivia Davalos, 9, stood before her classmates and proudly proclaimed: \u201cThis is my dad. He\u2019s a cardiologist. He\u2019s a heart doctor.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

For the next 30 minutes, Mrs. Denise Board\u2019s fourth-grade class at St. Paul\u2019s Catholic School in Colorado Springs got a lesson in cardiology from Dr. Jorge Davalos<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The doctor from UCHealth Memorial Hospital<\/a> began by standing in front of a white board and drawing a picture of the human heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know how many chambers your heart has?\u2019\u2019 Dr. Davalos, a UCHealth Medical Group physician, asked.<\/p>\n

He explained that the heart has four chambers, an aorta and four valves \u2013 a tricuspid valve, aortic valve, pulmonary valve and mitral valve.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoes anyone know why it is called the mitral valve? You\u2019re never going to guess,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

The children laughed. \u201cHave you been to church when the bishop is there? What\u2019s the name of his hat?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

One of the children answered enthusiastically: \u201cThe big hat.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, it is a big hat but the name of the hat is a miter hat. Someone looked at that valve and decided it looked like the bishop\u2019s hat, so they called it the mitral valve.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Dr. Davalos gave the students a chance to listen to his heart through his stethoscope. He told the children that they\u2019re listening for the sound of \u201cthe lub and the dub.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you think you are hearing when you hear the sound of the lub and the dub?\u2019\u2019 he asked.<\/p>\n

A very smart fourth-grader answered correctly: \u201cThe valves.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cYes, that\u2019s the sound of the valves opening and closing,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

He showed the children a basketball-sized model of the human heart, and explained what happens when someone has a heart attack. He pointed to the network of blood vessels known as the coronary arteries that surround the heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you have a heart attack, it\u2019s because one of these arteries is clogged,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Davalos said.<\/p>\n

As if on cue, one of the kids asked: \u201cHow does it get clogged?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

The question launched a discussion about healthy living and a few things the children could do to keep themselves healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cEat right and exercise so you stay healthy. Maintain a good, healthy weight and don\u2019t eat junk food so you don\u2019t clog up your arteries with cholesterol,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n

Then, with tongue-in-cheek, he asked the fourth-graders: \u201cWho here likes to smoke?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

One boy raised his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of people we know and\u00a0love smoke,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cBut we know that most people start smoking as teenagers, and smoking gets you hooked. It\u2019s a bad thing. You\u2019ll be teenagers in a few years, and I\u2019m telling you not to start.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

One student responded: \u201cI think it smells bad.\u2019\u2019 And, another chimed in: \u201cYou can get lung cancer.\u2019\u2019 Smart kids.<\/p>\n

Next, the doctor used a portable ultrasound machine to show the children what the inside of his carotid artery looks like. He put a gel on his neck and the tip of the probe and then placed the probe on his neck. The kids watched the screen, where a black-and-white image of the doctor\u2019s carotid artery appeared.<\/p>\n

One little girl asked: \u201cIsn\u2019t that how you see babies?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Dr. Davalos explained that the ultrasound helps doctors see babies, kidneys, the liver, pancreas, bladder and other organs.<\/p>\n

One child was very interested in the gel that Dr. Davalos had applied to his neck.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you going to have to take a shower?\u2019\u2019 he asked.<\/p>\n

At the end of the fast-paced lesson, Olivia Davalos, told her father: \u201cHey Dad, guess what? I\u2019m a student of the month.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

A few minutes later, Olivia and three classmates headed down the squeaky-clean halls of St. Paul\u2019s to pick up their certificates of achievement. They had joy in their hearts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
