It was that research that guided the creation of new wellness tools within the UCHealth app. Photo courtesy of University of Colorado.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The wellness tools draw on research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/amy-huebschmann-md\/\">Dr. Amy Huebschmann<\/a>, who cares for patients at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-internal-medicine-anschutz-outpatient-pavilion\/\">UCHealth Internal Medicine at the Anschutz Outpatient Pavilion<\/a> in Aurora, and her co-lead researcher, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/accords\/about\/accords-faculty-directory\/Glasgow-Russell-UCD6000016211\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Russell Glasgow<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Huebschmann, Glasgow and their colleagues developed a health risk assessment based on questions patients often answer before their primary care appointments. The assessment then flagged high-risk areas and offered patients the opportunity to set goals. Then they did <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27356991\/\">a study<\/a>, comparing health outcomes for patients who completed the assessment versus those who did not.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that patients who were offered the simple assessment better identified risks to their health and were more likely to set behavior-change goals around physical activity, nutrition and risks for high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and other chronic diseases. And these goals lead to modest improvements in patient-reported health and higher patient satisfaction with provider visits.<\/p>\n<p>From her work with patients, Huebschmann learned that it\u2019s vital to help people pick simple, targeted goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you focus on one goal at a time, it\u2019s easier to make changes. Change is hard, and trying to change too many things at once can be tricky,\u201d said Huebschmann, who is also a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/accords\/about\/accords-faculty-directory\/Huebschmann-Amy-UCD14157\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">professor of medicine<\/a> at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado Anschutz School of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To help patients succeed, the wellness app offers small, &#8220;SMART goals&#8221; \u2014 meaning they\u2019re specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time sensitive.<\/p>\n<p>The app doesn\u2019t offer too many choices to ensure that patients won\u2019t suffer from &#8220;choice overload.&#8221; And the designers kept the app as intuitive and easy to use as possible so patients will enjoy coming back again and again.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Here are simple steps to get started in using the wellness tools in the app:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Open the UCHealth app and log in.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Tap the \u201cWellness\u201d sunshine icon<\/li>\n<li>Tap \u201cSet up your profile.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"su-image-carousel  su-image-carousel-has-outline su-image-carousel-slides-style-photo su-image-carousel-controls-style-dark su-image-carousel-align-center\" style=\"max-width:300px\" data-flickity-options='{\"groupCells\":true,\"cellSelector\":\".su-image-carousel-item\",\"adaptiveHeight\":true,\"cellAlign\":\"left\",\"prevNextButtons\":true,\"pageDots\":false,\"autoPlay\":false,\"imagesLoaded\":true,\"contain\":false,\"selectedAttraction\":0.025,\"friction\":0.28}' id=\"su_image_carousel_6a30c60865173\"><div class=\"su-image-carousel-item\"><div class=\"su-image-carousel-item-content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"400\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/06\/15161411\/1-homescreen.webp\" class=\"\" alt=\"To get to the wellness tools within the UCHealth, find the sun wellness icon at the bottom of the app&#039;s home screen. And the wellness tools live right next to all the other tools you traditionally use for your medical appointments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe goal is to create a single place where you can get support both when you\u2019re sick and when you\u2019re well,\u201d said Nicole Caputo, vice president for experience and innovation at UCHealth.<\/p>\n<p>You can choose goals that align with the health challenges you\u2019re facing.<\/p>\n<p>You also can opt to share your wellness assessment and goals with your care team. The assessment and tools can help drive targeted conversations during medical visits, and your care team can help you stay on track with your goals.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Rewarding patients who succeed in their wellness goals<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Along with sharing your wellness goals and accomplishments with your provider, you can take advantage of rewards and content from community partners, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Exploring UCHealth Today articles about outdoor recreation, physical activity or health topics like sleep.<\/li>\n<li>Accessing workout playlists or relaxing songs from the Colorado Symphony, all on Spotify.<\/li>\n<li>Getting tips and dog recipes to keep your furry &#8220;motivation partner\u201d healthy, from Brutus Bone Broth.<\/li>\n<li>Receiving oral hygeine tips from Waterpik.<\/li>\n<li>Learning gardening techniques and getting ideas for projects from STIHL.<\/li>\n<li>Trying a new, healthy recipe from Natural Grocers.<\/li>\n<li>Brewing your own tea with tips from Teatulia.<\/li>\n<li>Following guided meditations from Muse.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Caputo and her team worked with Huebschmann to develop the evidence-based wellness tools because they wanted to extend the benefits of the UCHealth app well beyond medical care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can go into the app to access a meditation, challenge yourself, set a goal, make an appointment or message your provider,\u201d Caputo said.<\/p>\n<p>Everything that happens outside the doors of hospitals and clinics has a huge impact on people\u2019s lives and on their health.<\/p>\n<p>And UCHealth providers want to do all they can to support people as they adopt healthier habits to eat well and exercise every day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur mission at UCHealth is to improve lives.
