Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From fluctuating hormones to pregnancy, and from postpartum to menopause, women face unique stressors that can contribute to emotional dysregulation and mental health challenges.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But behavioral health practices can help, according to Amy Goodwin,\u00a0a licensed professional counselor and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-behavioral-health-clinic-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\"> behavioral health counselor<\/a> at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center.<\/a><\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThrough steps such as developing healthy stress management, fostering a healthy lifestyle and being intentional with internal dialogues, we can decrease the intensity of emotional dysregulation and not get lost within the distress,\u201d Goodwin said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Behavioral health challenges unique to women<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Various\u00a0life changes have\u00a0distinct impacts for\u00a0women.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Perinatal mood disorders are among one of the most common complications that occur during pregnancy and the first year after giving birth, with one in five women experiencing perinatal or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/new-drug-zuranolone-targets-postpartum-depression\/\">postpartum depression<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s so much pressure about being happy after the birth of a child that sometimes it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/new-postpartum-support-group-all-inclusive\/\">hard to talk about how it can<\/a>\u00a0also\u00a0be dramatic and confusing,\u201d Goodwin said. \u201cHormonal changes cloud your thinking, there\u2019s a lack of sleep, there\u2019s the pressure of having such a vulnerable baby relying on you. Basically, life as you know it has changed, and that\u2019s a giant shift in identity.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For women who want to get pregnant but aren\u2019t able to, the emotional stress can be intense, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/hormone-therapy-menopause-signs-safety\/\">hormonal fluctuations through perimenopause and menopause<\/a> can\u00a0bring\u00a0a range of symptoms such as depression, anxiety and brain fog.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Also, certain\u00a0gynecological disorders, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/endometriosis\/\">endometriosis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/polycystic-ovary-syndrome\/\">polycystic ovarian syndrome<\/a> and chronic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/pelvic-pain\/\">pelvic pain<\/a>, can affect quality of life and contribute to emotional distress, sometimes leading to depression and anxiety.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hope through behavioral health therapy<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Simply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/behavioral-health\/\">talking with a therapist<\/a> can help with processing emotions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cJust hearing our internal dialogue, our brain has an amazing capacity for helping itself and restructuring around more effective thinking patterns,\u201d Goodwin said. \u201cThe human brain and body have a powerful instinct to work towards the creation of homeostasis. If we can practice and participate in health care strategies, we\u2019re allowing these systems to work more effectively.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Recognizing and embracing a range of emotions can also be vital to supporting mental health. That can be challenging in today\u2019s culture, which doesn\u2019t always encourage people to feel and understand emotions.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559731&quot;:360,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cThere\u2019s such a gap in understanding the neuroscience of our emotions,\u201d Goodwin said. \u201cEmotions are a direct communication to us and for us. If we can learn what our emotions are trying to tell us, we\u2019re happier. If you ignore the early emotional communications of stress and distress, they can escalate and become much more difficult to deal with.
