Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mid-morning and mid-afternoon cravings can pose significant challenges to maintaining a healthy weight.<\/p>\n<p>However, when chosen wisely, snacks can become powerful allies, helping you stay on track with weight management and supporting better overall health when hunger or cravings hit.<\/p>\n<p>Aarika Ortiz, <a id=\"https:\/\/www.chefaarika.com\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chefaarika.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Denver chef who specializes in cooking healthy international cuisine<\/a>, shared her recipe for baked stuffed apples, a snack she describes as \u201ca healthier way to keep cravings in check.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For some people, sugar intake can resemble an addiction because of the effects it has on the brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018High\u2010sugar intake stimulates the reward center in the brain, releasing dopamine, which produces a feeling of pleasure similar to the physiological mechanisms of drug addiction,\u2019\u2019 according to experts at the <a id=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12257121\/\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC12257121\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Institutes of Health<\/a>. \u2018\u2018Excessive cravings for high\u2010sugar foods pose a significant health challenge in modern society.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>So, how can you satisfy a sweet craving without compromising your health?<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018For many people, sugar is the hardest ingredient to reduce or moderate,\u201d Ortiz said. \u201cRecipes like this one provide the natural sweetness your body craves, using wholesome, unprocessed ingredients that work beautifully together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recommends planning snacks just as we plan our main meals.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018Having filling, satisfying snacks on hand is essential when committing to a healthier lifestyle and a healthy weight,\u201d Ortiz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018When we don\u2019t plan ahead, hunger can sneak up on us, often leading to energy crashes and choices that don\u2019t align with our goals. Fueling your body with whole, unprocessed ingredients helps stabilize blood sugar, support energy levels, and keep cravings in check,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2018This dish can be enjoyed as a nourishing snack or a healthier dessert, helping you stay energized until your next meal.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Baked stuffed apples<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>Ingredients<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>4 Honeycrisp apples<\/li>\n<li>1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup pecans (or your favorite nut), chopped<\/li>\n<li>2 tbsp dried cranberries or dried fruit of choice<\/li>\n<li>1 teaspoon ground cinnamon<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc teaspoon ground ginger<\/li>\n<li>\u00bc teaspoon ground nutmeg<\/li>\n<li>2 tablespoons\u00a0coconut oil, melted<\/li>\n<li>2 to 3 tablespoons maple syrup or honey<\/li>\n<li>\u00bd cup apple cider (for lower sugar, substitute water)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Directions<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Preheat the oven to 400\u00b0F.<\/p>\n<p>Core the apples by slicing off the tops and removing the stems. Cut halfway down into the apple and remove the seeds. Using a spoon, carefully scoop out the center.<\/p>\n<p>Tip: Some prefer to peel the apples, but leaving the skin on adds extra nutrients.<\/p>\n<p>Lightly grease an oven-safe 8\u00d78-inch baking dish with coconut oil or olive oil. Place the apples upright in the dish.<\/p>\n<p>In a bowl, combine the oats, pecans, dried fruit, and spices.
