{"id":88457,"date":"2026-02-12T10:00:56","date_gmt":"2026-02-12T17:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=88457"},"modified":"2026-02-11T11:09:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-11T18:09:45","slug":"our-stories-caroline-lerner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/our-stories-caroline-lerner\/","title":{"rendered":"Caroline Lerner"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88460\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88460\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-88460\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2026\/02\/03133359\/YMEP-Caroline-Lerner-web-version-final-1.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"515\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88460\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caroline Lerner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Turning paper airplanes and toy cars into patient progress<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From making paper airplanes and helping a patient race his toy cars, nurse Caroline Lerner tapped into creative, playful ideas to support a patient who was recovering from a traumatic brain injury.<\/p>\n<p>Lerner is an acute care nurse at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> who loves bringing both creativity and compassion to her unit.<\/p>\n<p>The patient spent much of his day in a Posey bed \u2014 a specialized safety bed designed to keep patients secure \u2014 with limited mobility and speech. Recognizing her patient\u2019s frustration and his desire to move and connect with people, Lerner found simple ways to keep her patient engaged while he had to be in his room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe patient had his own wind-up toy cars, so I made a racetrack out of tape in his room,\u201d Lerner said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe loved his cars and started by watching me race them. Over time, he began taking over, and it transitioned to me watching him drive the cars through the course all on his own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Lerner and her patient weren\u2019t racing toy cars, she decided to encourage him to leave his room and connect with people in the hospital hallways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI made paper airplanes for us to throw in the unit hallway, looking up different ways to fold the paper and create unique planes,\u201d she said. \u201cWe would compete against each other and other nurses on the unit to see whose plane could fly the farthest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As time passed, Lerner noticed that the patient was improving and becoming more independent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe learned how to decorate and build his own paper airplanes and even started winning the friendly competitions against the nurses,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving the room also sparked noticeable changes in the patient\u2019s mood and communication.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would say hello to every person he passed in the hallways \u2014 patients, nurses, visitors \u2014 everyone. It was really sweet, and we all loved having him on our floor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Lerner, the most powerful change was seeing her patient regain confidence over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy patient came to the unit not understanding how to do things independently due to his injury, and was understandably frustrated,\u201d she said. \u201cWith time and practice, he became more confident and comfortable in his actions and social interactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through simple activities and thoughtful engagement, Lerner helped foster confidence, independence and connection during an important stage of the patient\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy goal was to bring a sense of purpose and joy to his daily routine,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Margaret Ries, an occupational therapist at University of Colorado Hospital, recognized Lerner\u2019s impact in a recent Celebrating You nomination.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCaroline\u2019s thoughtful engagement with the patient and her ability to adapt activities to his needs reflect her deep commitment to the patient\u2019s well-being and the healing process.
