Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Colorado health experts and UCHealth medical providers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/treatments-procedures\/immunizations-and-vaccines\/childhood-vaccines\/\">continue to recommend the full schedule of vaccinations for babies and children<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Medical experts are following guidance based on peer-reviewed scientific studies and the best practices of trusted health entities like <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthychildren.org\/English\/safety-prevention\/immunizations\/Pages\/Recommended-Immunization-Schedules.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and other organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Federal officials in the U.S. recently <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/press-room\/fact-sheet-cdc-childhood-immunization-recommendations.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removed<\/a> hepatitis A, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/newborn-hepatitis-b-vaccine-what-you-need-to-know\/\">hepatitis B<\/a>, meningitis, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/how-long-is-rsv-contagious-get-facts-about-this-virus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RSV<\/a> (respiratory syncytial virus), influenza, coronavirus and rotavirus from its list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/treatments-procedures\/immunizations-and-vaccines\/\">routine vaccinations<\/a> for babies and children. Vaccine managers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommend those vaccines only or \u201chigh-risk groups and populations\u201d or after \u201cshared clinical decision-making,\u201d meaning a dialogue between parents and their child\u2019s medical provider.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A confusing change in vaccine guidance<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The change in guidance has <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.idsociety.org\/news--publications-new\/articles\/2026\/idsa-statement-on-childhood-vaccine-schedule\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">triggered concern<\/a> among physician organizations and public health experts. Despite CDC leaders describing the action as being based on \u201ca scientific review of the underlying science, comparing the U.S. child and adolescent immunization schedule with those of peer, developed nations,\u201d American Academy of Pediatrics leaders <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/34104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">called<\/a> the CDC\u2019s recommended removal of several universal childhood vaccines \u201cdangerous and unnecessary.\u201d The academy said it would continue to make its own <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/downloads.aap.org\/AAP\/PDF\/AAP-Immunization-Schedule.pdf?_gl=1*ve90jw*_ga*MTgzOTE2MDA2NS4xNzY1NDg4OTM1*_ga_FD9D3XZVQQ*czE3Njc5MTEyNjUkbzQkZzEkdDE3Njc5MTIwODEkajYwJGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">evidence-based recommendations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt a time when parents, pediatricians and the public are looking for clear guidance and accurate information, this ill-considered decision will sow further chaos and confusion and erode confidence in immunizations,\u201d American Academy of Pediatrics President Dr. Andrew D. Racine said in a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/aapnews\/news\/34104\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders at the American Medical Association also opposed the CDC\u2019s updated recommendations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChanges of this magnitude require careful review, expert and public input, and clear scientific justification,\u201d American Medical Association trustee Dr. Sandra Adamson Fryhofer said in a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/press-center\/ama-press-releases\/ama-statement-changes-childhood-vaccine-schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, \u201cWhen longstanding recommendations are altered without a robust, evidence-based process, it undermines public trust and puts children at unnecessary risk of preventable disease.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sticking with vaccination guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Medical experts at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment continue to recommend that families follow the American Academy of Pediatrics <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/downloads.aap.org\/AAP\/PDF\/AAP-Immunization-Schedule.pdf?_gl=1*ve90jw*_ga*MTgzOTE2MDA2NS4xNzY1NDg4OTM1*_ga_FD9D3XZVQQ*czE3Njc5MTEyNjUkbzQkZzEkdDE3Njc5MTIwODEkajYwJGwwJGgw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cColorado\u2019s vaccine guidance is rooted in decades of strong scientific evidence and real-world experience,\u201d Dr. Ned Calonge, the state health department\u2019s chief medical officer, said in a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/press-release\/colorado-reaffirms-evidence-based-vaccine-guidance-and-continued-access-for-families\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cRegardless of changes at the federal level, our priority is ensuring families and providers have trusted, evidence-based guidance to keep children and communities healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UCHealth leaders and medical providers are following suit in backing the American Academy of Pediatrics\u2019 recommended vaccination schedule.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe continue to follow the science, as we always have, and we think the guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics is still the correct guidance,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/michelle-barron-md\/\">Dr. Michelle Barron<\/a>, UCHealth\u2019s\u00a0senior medical director of infection prevention and control.<\/p>\n<p>Barron, who is also <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/som.cuanschutz.edu\/Profiles\/Faculty\/Profile\/8603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a professor<\/a> in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado School of Medicine<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz campus<\/a>, said she was \u201calarmed\u201d at the new CDC recommendations. She said the idea that vaccines be pulled from universal recommendation instead be administered only after a dialogue with a clinician is especially troubling. There already is a dialogue with clinicians regarding vaccinations, she says.
