{"id":86484,"date":"2025-10-30T10:00:35","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T16:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=86484"},"modified":"2025-10-29T15:01:56","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T21:01:56","slug":"our-stories-abby-boer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/our-stories-abby-boer\/","title":{"rendered":"Abby Boer"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86522\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-86522\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/10\/29145552\/Abby-Boer-YMEP-2-1-scaled.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"497\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Abby Boer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Nurse helps rescue two stray Rottweilers on hospital campus that darted into traffic and then tried to catch a duck in campus pond<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While on her lunch break, Abby Boer spotted two dogs running loose in heavy traffic on nearby East Colfax Avenue.<\/p>\n<p>After watching the dogs dodge vehicles for a couple of minutes, Boer tracked the pair headed to a pond on the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a><\/span> campus.<\/p>\n<p>As an acute care nurse on the hospital\u2019s 11th floor, Boer has a bird&#8217;s-eye view of the surrounding campus.<\/p>\n<p>Worried that the dogs might venture into dangerous traffic again, she decided to race down to help them.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The two dogs appeared to be young, fully-grown Rottweilers: one male and one female,\u201d Boer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI assumed their owners were nearby, but after 15 minutes of watching them run alone near traffic, I knew something was off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Boer called UCHealth security as she was heading down to help the dogs. She met a security officer outside. They found both dogs swimming in the campus pond, desperately trying to catch a duck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey looked starved,\u201d Boer said. \u201cYou could see their bones, and the female had sores on her ears. They acted friendly, but it was heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The security officer called Aurora Animal Control to inform them of the situation. Boer and the officer stayed near the swimming dogs while they waited for help to arrive.<\/p>\n<p>The male dog was especially obsessed with catching a duck and kept swimming for nearly an hour.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was hard to watch him swim after the duck for so long, knowing he would never catch it,\u201d Boer said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86490\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86490\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-86490\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/10\/27160552\/Aurora-Animal-Control-helping-one-of-the-dogs-on-the-University-of-Colorado-Hospital-campus.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"350\" height=\"366\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86490\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aurora Animal Control helping one of the dogs on the University of Colorado Hospital campus<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe security officer and I jokingly played \u2018rock-paper-scissors\u2019 to decide which of us would jump in the water to save the dog if he ran out of energy before animal control arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The female dog was more cautious. She would slowly approach Boer, then dart away if Boer got too close or moved too fast.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe looked so sweet and was acting like she wanted help but didn\u2019t know how to engage or want to be too far away from her companion,\u201d said Boer.<\/p>\n<p>Animal control officers arrived about 40 minutes later and safely corralled both dogs. They shared that they had received a call earlier about this pair being spotted in a neighboring chicken coop looking for food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dogs were so friendly,\u201d Boer said. \u201cTheir tails were wagging as they were helped out of the water. They deserve a good, caring home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of Boer\u2019s willingness to get involved, the dogs now have a chance to receive proper care.<\/p>\n<p>Kacey Whittenburg \u2014 a clinical educator of nursing \u2014 submitted a \u2018Celebrating You\u2019 nomination to honor Boer for her quick thinking and compassionate care.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While this award often highlights patient stories, I wanted to recognize Abby for being an upstander. She saw something amiss and acted immediately.
