{"id":86294,"date":"2025-10-16T10:00:58","date_gmt":"2025-10-16T16:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=86294"},"modified":"2025-10-15T14:02:32","modified_gmt":"2025-10-15T20:02:32","slug":"our-stories-eli-kaliski","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/our-stories-eli-kaliski\/","title":{"rendered":"Eli Kaliski"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><figure id=\"attachment_86296\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86296\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-86296\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/10\/15110313\/YMEP-Eli-Kaliski-image-3-web-version.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"456\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86296\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eli Kaliski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>A nursing team&#8217;s swift intervention prevents choking tragedy on cardiology unit<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When Eli Kaliski heard an urgent alarm sound on his cardiology medicine unit, he dropped everything and rushed to the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The recent nursing graduate who works in acute care at <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a><\/span> was ready for anything when a fellow nurse triggered an alarm called the CenTrak Real-Time Location System, or RTLS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever the (RTLS) button is pushed, everyone on the unit drops what they are doing if they aren\u2019t already helping another patient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Kaliski arrived in the room, the patient was choking, visibly panicked and in need of immediate help. Kaliski learned from the primary nurse that the patient had pills lodged in their airway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone available on the unit came to check in with the primary nurse to see how we could best support,\u201d Kaliski said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just what you do as a nurse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The primary nurse began assigning tasks to those who showed up first and called on Kaliski to help dislodge the pills blocking the patient\u2019s airway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got behind the patient and performed the Heimlich maneuver while others on my team began suctioning the patient\u2019s airway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaliski and the team resolved the situation in less than five minutes \u2014 from calling for assistance to clearing the patient\u2019s airway.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe primary nurse and CNA also did an incredible job of cleaning up the patient and calming them down immediately after we dislodged the pills,\u201d Kaliski said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn life-threatening and time-sensitive situations, you can clearly see how our unit works well as a team,\u201d Kaliski said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are great at delegating, and we hope that our patients recognize how well we collaborate and the quality care we provide together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe situation solidified for me that I love this team and that I can always count on them to lend a helping hand when it\u2019s needed,\u201d Kaliski said.<\/p>\n<p>Nick Klein, nurse manager on the University of Colorado Hospital\u2019s cardiology medicine unit, submitted a Celebrating You commendation to congratulate Kaliski for his quick, outstanding response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThanks to Eli\u2019s swift intervention and calm decisiveness, a potentially life-threatening situation was averted, preventing what could have been a severe or even fatal outcome,\u201d Klein said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis actions showcased not only his growing clinical skills but also his dedication to patient safety and care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><div class=\"su-row\">\n<div class=\"su-column su-column-size-2-3 su-column-centered\"><div class=\"su-column-inner su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>You Make Extraordinary Possible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Together, we recognize and honor the qualities within ourselves by shining a spotlight on how each and every one of us improve lives in big ways and small.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\" class=\"su-button su-button-style-flat\" style=\"color:#FFFFFF;background-color:#A22343;border-color:#821c36;border-radius:56px\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"color:#FFFFFF;padding:0px 26px;font-size:20px;line-height:40px;border-color:#be657c;border-radius:56px;text-shadow:none\"> Share a story<\/span><\/a>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A nursing team&#8217;s swift intervention prevents choking tragedy on cardiology unit When Eli Kaliski heard an urgent alarm sound on his cardiology medicine unit, he dropped everything and rushed to the scene.
