Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re not feeling well or you\u2019ve had an accident, should you head to the ER, an urgent care clinic, or call your primary care doctor? <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Knowing when and where to get the care you need can help you get help fast while saving money. Treatment at a hospital ER is typically the most expensive option, and depending on your condition, you may have to wait hours to get the help you need.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learn more about your options and how to choose the right place to get medical care.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Know when to go to the ER\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cACT FAST\u201d is a helpful mnemonic guide for the sorts of conditions that call for a trip to the ER, said <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/robert-p-lam-emergency-medicine\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dr. Robert Lam<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, who specializes in emergency medicine at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-memorial-hospital-central\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> the only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-trauma-department-memorial-hospital-central\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Level I trauma center in southern Colorado<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He advises people to call 911 or go directly to an ER for any of these reasons:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>A = Accident.<\/strong> Serious injuries, broken bones or severe bleeding<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>C = Chest pain<\/strong>. Could signal a heart attack or other serious cause. Don\u2019t delay<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>T = Trouble breathing<\/strong>. Asthma, an allergic reaction, or poisoning<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>F = Fainting.<\/strong> Dizziness, fainting, sudden weakness could indicate a stroke<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>A = Allergic reaction<\/strong> <strong>with swelling or trouble breathing.<\/strong> Reactions to bee and insect stings, or medication and food could be causes<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>S = Sudden.<\/strong> Any condition that comes on quickly, including sudden weakness or confusion<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><strong>T = Time sensitive.<\/strong> Things like strokes and heart attacks need immediate care<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cIf you\u2019re in an ACT FAST category, those are good reasons to come to the Emergency Department,\u201d said Lam, who is also an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/som.cuanschutz.edu\/Profiles\/Faculty\/Profile\/22833\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">assistant professor<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> of emergency medicine at the <\/span><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">University of Colorado School of Medicine<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/span><\/a> <span data-contrast=\"auto\">in Aurora.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe all regret when a patient sits at home and doesn\u2019t get emergency care when they need it. That\u2019s a missed opportunity to provide care and get to the best outcome,\u201d Lam said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Strokes offer a good example, he said. A<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/understanding-strokes-quick-treatment-greatly-benefit-patients\/\"> stroke that is treated in the first four hours<\/a> after the symptoms emerge calls for a different treatment than one that began two days ago, and better outcomes are likely, Lam said.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the same time, an ER is not the right place to go for help with routine medical concerns. Doctors and nurses care for the most critically injured patients first, a practice called \u201ctriaging.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ERs are not \u201cfirst-come, first-served\u201d facilities, Lam said. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cWe prioritize care based on how critically ill the person is.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Showing up with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/sore-throat-emergency\/\">a condition that can be treated elsewhere<\/a> can drain resources for those who really need them.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Urgent Care providers can help with things that can\u2019t wait\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Urgent care clinics <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/er-vs-urgent-care-sprains-and-strains\/\">treat sprains<\/a>, minor infections and other complaints that need attention quickly but aren\u2019t life-threatening.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Providers at urgent care often can help patients more quickly than doctors at a hospital ER. Many have extended hours, so they\u2019re often open on evenings and weekends when your primary care clinic is closed. Some urgent care clinics offer X-ray and lab services, while others do not. It can help to call ahead.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Primary care providers help with preventive care and handle long-term health issues<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Your primary care provider should be a key partner in keeping you healthy and helping you stay on top of routine issues like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/vaccines-for-adults\/\">vaccinations<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/why-health-screenings-are-an-important-part-of-preventive-care\/\">health screenings<\/a>.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Create a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/why-do-i-need-a-primary-care-provider\/\">strong relationship with your primary care provider<\/a> and schedule regular checkups. The better your primary care doctor or provider knows you, the healthier you are likely to be. And if you get sick with a case of the flu or you need a refill on a medication, you can call your doctor\u2019s office for help.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Primary care clinics are not the best place to get help for an emergency, and if you show up with one, a nurse or medical assistant is likely to send you to urgent care or the ER.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re not sure where to go, you can call your doctor\u2019s office for guidance. Many large health care systems also have specially-trained triage nurses who will talk to you about your symptoms and help you make the right decision about the best place to get medical care.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Video appointments and Virtual Urgent Care can be an option <\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Access to see doctors online expanded greatly during the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/video-appointment\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Video visits<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> enable patients to connect directly with a medical provider using a computer, tablet, smart phone or other electronic device, through secure video connections.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And if you have an urgent medical issue, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/virtual-urgent-care-for-anyone-in-colorado\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">a Virtual Urgent Care visit<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> can be a convenient, affordable option.\u00a0 Online visits are also a great alternative for people who don\u2019t live near a hospital or an urgent care clinic or who don\u2019t have transportation. But if you have had an accident or an ACT FAST situation, they\u2019re likely to send you to an ER.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Be wary about using search engines or AI to diagnose yourself<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many people use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/northfield-family-medicine-doctor-welcomes-questions-gathered-from-dr-google\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201cDr. Google\u201d<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or Artificial Intelligence (AI) to learn more about medical conditions and treatment. You can find some good, general health information online, but be sure you are getting information from legitimate health experts. Lam advises against using AI to research an acute condition, determine a diagnosis or replace regular care. And beware of misinformation, which is rampant on social media.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cAI can be the basis for medical knowledge, but it needs to be balanced against other sources and fact-checked,\u201d Lam said. \u201cAI doesn\u2019t substitute for seeing a clinician in person.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">When in doubt, don\u2019t wait.
