She spearheaded the creation of a collaborative work group aimed at improving safety on local trails.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, accidents related to off-highway vehicles or OHVs were the second leading cause of injury treated at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-pikes-peak-regional-hospital\/\">UCHealth Pikes Peak Regional Hospital<\/a>. Tasked with investigating this increase of OHV injuries, Carlo began her search for data to better understand the scope of the problem.<\/p>\n<p>But as she quickly discovered, \u201cthe data was nonexistent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Carlo collaborated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/\">Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment<\/a> to comb through billing codes in hopes of uncovering patterns. Still, the information available offered little clarity. The lack of reliable data underscored the urgency for a community-driven approach.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Carlo assembled an OHV work group, a partnership among different agencies such as <a href=\"https:\/\/staythetrail.org\/\">Stay the Trail<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscolorado.org\/\">Children\u2019s Hospital Colorado<\/a> and other key stakeholders. The work group\u2019s mission is clear: educate riders, promote safe practices and reduce preventable injuries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want everybody to be enjoying Colorado\u2019s recreation, but we just want you to do it safer,\u201d Carlo said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the work group\u2019s standout initiatives: pop-up trailhead events, designed to make safety information both accessible and fun. These interactive events feature helmet giveaways, educational outreach and even Sasquatch sightings, with Carlo often donning the costume herself to connect with trail users in a memorable and lighthearted way.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_84647\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-84647\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-84647\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2025\/08\/05095843\/Hannah-Carlo-inline-image-web-version.webp\" alt=\"A photo of a UCHealth tent at an event\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-84647\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo by Anslee Wolfe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A key resource distributed at these events is an educational brochure developed by the work group titled, \u201cA trip to the trail shouldn\u2019t include a trip to the hospital.\u201d This concise guide outlines essential safety tips, state laws and trail regulations to help riders prepare before they hit the dirt.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative has already started to shift local behavior. Carlo says she\u2019s hearing directly from Teller County residents who appreciate the agencies\u2019 presence and outreach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe community has reached out to thank us for being there and for educating people,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing up there and making safety fun has created a culture that these communities care about their trails and their systems and they want people to be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Carlo, the work group\u2019s trailhead presence is helping to shift behavior in meaningful ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people who live there have seen it,\u201d Carlo said. \u201cPeople are safer out on the trails. There are more people wearing helmets. It\u2019s probably been a slow culture change, but it\u2019s getting there, and I think we\u2019re helping accelerate it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She credits the program\u2019s success to the wide network of partners who stepped up to be part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis program has been a really large collaboration with a lot of different people from different agencies who really care about keeping these trails safe,\u201d Carlo said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t have done it on my own.
