One daughter looked extra heartbroken with tears streaming down her face.<\/p>\n<p>Pentland didn\u2019t know the circumstances, as the patient wasn\u2019t on her pod. Compelled to learn more, Pentland inquired about the family. They received some pretty tough news. Cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing the patient\u2019s daughter sitting on the floor bawling brought up Pentland\u2019s own feelings. Just last year, her brother passed away from cancer. He had children of his own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo having been through that and seeing her heartbroken reminded me of seeing [my family] go through it,\u201d Pentland said. \u201cAnd no child should have to go through that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pentland felt compelled to help the patient\u2019s daughter, who was sitting with her back slumped against a hallway wall. \u201cDo you mind if I sit with you?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew she didn\u2019t need words,\u201d Pentland said. \u201cSo I just sat and made sure I had contact with her, just to know that I\u2019m there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the next 10 minutes, Pentland sat next to the daughter. She placed her hand on the daughter\u2019s knee, providing comfort and offering words of empathy.<\/p>\n<p>Once they stood up, they embraced in a hug.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe held onto me tighter,\u201d Pentland said. \u201cShe really lost it when we hugged. It\u2019s that ugly heart breaking cry and it was right into my shoulder. I told her \u2018I know it sucks. You won\u2019t get over it but you will get through it.\u2019 And, I said, \u2018just keep going, just keep doing what you\u2019re doing. Hanging out with your mom. Take care of yourself.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, colleague Morgan Jacobsen submitted a Celebrating You recognition for Pentland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the daughter eventually sat in the middle of the hall and started crying, Amanda went up to her and sat close to her. Amanda spoke with her and comforted her. It allowed the young woman to not be alone and have someone support her,\u2019\u2019 Jacobsen wrote in the recognition. \u201cAmanda is just so open hearted and caring that she cannot allow anyone to be down or in pain without trying to help as much as she can.
