Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>James Lutz loves spending his weekends in mountainous places where there are plenty of threats from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/thunder-and-lightning-safety\/\">sudden lightning storms<\/a> to cliffy routes up steep peaks.<\/p>\n<p>He finds it relaxing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, there\u2019s stuff out there that wants to kill you, but that\u2019s the beauty of it,\u201d said Lutz, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/james-lutz-lpc\/\">a licensed professional counselor<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-greeley-medical-clinic\/\">UCHealth Greeley Medical Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019re out there, you have to be aware of your surroundings. You\u2019re forced to be present,\u201d said Lutz, who especially loves sharing adventures in nature with his family, including two kids, ages 17 and 11.<\/p>\n<p>Lutz is not only a lover of the outdoors, himself. Like many health experts, he regularly gives patients a novel prescription: spend more time in nature.<\/p>\n<p>The idea that the outdoors can be good for people isn\u2019t a new concept. In Canada, doctors will <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/02\/09\/1079356799\/a-new-program-in-canada-gives-doctors-the-option-of-prescribing-national-park-vi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prescribe<\/a> passes to national parks. In Japan, residents have <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/travel\/article\/forest-bathing-nature-walk-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">practiced<\/a> forest bathing, or meditative walks through tree canopies, since the 1980s.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">Check out your local<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/libraries-offer-free-access-passes-to-colorado-state-parks-and-attractions\/\"> library for a free day pass<\/a> to state parks and other local outdoor recreation areas and activities. <\/div>\n<h2><strong>From gardening to hiking to bird watching, spending time in nature boosts mental and physical health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Studies show time in nature reduces blood pressure, anxiety, stress and restores a sense of calm. And we\u2019re learning that too much time spent indoors and on screens is detrimental to health and mental health. \u00a0<a id=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/richardlouv.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Richard Louv<\/a>\u2019s 2005 book, \u201cLast Child in the Woods,\u201d <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/richardlouv.com\/blog\/what-is-nature-deficit-disorder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> that children\u2019s separation from the natural world was causing \u201cnature deficit disorder,\u201d the root of a host of problems including ADHD, obesity and mental health issues such as anxiety. He has since expanded his thinking to adults.<\/p>\n<p>We even learned to self-medicate during the pandemic, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/get-out-there-10-great-hikes-in-rocky-mountain-national-park\/\">Rocky Mountain National Park<\/a> had to create a reservation system and visitation to Colorado state parks increased by 25%. (Those numbers have since declined slightly from pandemic peaks.)<\/p>\n<p>But the idea that just being outside, even just sitting on your back patio, is good for your health has gained serious traction among experts grasping for anything to help dent our struggles with mental health: The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment has a whole program it calls <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/thrivingweld.com\/outdoor-rx\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OutdoorRx<\/a>.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">Looking for a backyard activity? Try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/birding-for-beginners-spot-birds-in-your-backyard-and-beyond\/\">birdwatching<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The department launched the program in 2019 to promote the mental health benefits of being in nature, but it also lists physical benefits such as improved cognitive function, cardiovascular fitness and even improved cancer survival rates for as little as 30 minutes a week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust sit in your yard,\u201d said Olivia Egen, the public health initiatives supervisor for the Weld County health department. \u201cIf you\u2019re outside for even five minutes, you\u2019ll feel immediate benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Time spent outdoors helps reduce the negative effects of screen time<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Lutz, just like those doctors in Canada, recommends the outdoors to his patients.<\/p>\n<p>Being active has its own benefits, Lutz said, and the outdoors is a part of that, but being outside goes beyond working up a sweat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s why you don\u2019t see sad people on the beach,\u201d Lutz said. \u201cEverybody has different limitations. Even for people who have low mobility, go sit on the patio. Just take a chair out there and look around you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spending time outdoors helps counteract all the time we watch TV, work on our computers or scroll on our phones. Screen time adds up to hours a day, and it\u2019s such a health concern that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/early-care-education\/php\/obesity-prevention-standards\/screen-time-limits.html#:~:text=Limit%20total%20media%20time%20for,more%20than%2030%20minutes%20weekly.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommends <\/a>limits for children 2 and older to 30 minutes a week. U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy is so concerned about social media\u2019s negative effects on teenagers that he <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/surgeongeneral\/reports-and-publications\/youth-mental-health\/social-media\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recently called on Congress to require warning labels much like the ones that accompany packs of cigarettes.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lutz agrees with Murthy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got too many electronics in our faces,\u201d Lutz said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77407\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77407\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77407\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/07\/30095519\/James-lutz-with-antlers-tiny.webp\" alt=\"James Lutz loves spending time outdoors, including finding antlers. Photo courtesy of James Lutz.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Unwind outside<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Egen understands what it\u2019s like to return home after a long day at work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re super tired, and you just want to relax,\u201d said Egen, the public health initiatives supervisor for the Weld County health department. \u201cBut sitting in front of the TV makes it worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OutdoorRX program has materials in both English and Spanish, something Egen hopes will reach Weld\u2019s large population of Hispanics and Spanish speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Convincing some Hispanics to take time for themselves outdoors can be challenging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they sometimes feel like it\u2019s a luxury they can\u2019t afford,\u201d Egen said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77408\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77408\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-77408\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/07\/30095713\/Lutz-family-spending-time-outdoors-tiny.webp\" alt=\"James Lutz loves spending time outdoors with his family, including his wife, left, and their two children. That\u2019s why health department experts encourage people to find affordable options close to home like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/gardening-just-for-the-health-of-it\/\">gardening<\/a> and exploring local parks, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/accessible-trails-and-natural-areas-in-colorado\/\">trails and open spaces<\/a> including <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/greeleygov.com\/activities\/natural-areas\/restoration-projects\/newest-natural-area\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greeley\u2019s new Shurview property.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Everyone can spend time outdoors. Even people who live in apartments and are surrounded by concrete can find a nearby picnic bench to sit on, Egen said.<\/p>\n<p>In order to help people find a special place, OutdoorRX lists all parks and recreational facilities in Weld by city.<\/p>\n<p>At one point in her life, Egen, who is Hispanic, didn\u2019t appreciate time spent outdoors, but as she learned about the benefits through avenues such as health conferences, she became a believer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never appreciated nature as much as I do now,\u201d Egen said.<\/p>\n<p>To get the full benefit of time spent outdoors, Egen encourages people to be intentional, meaning you can\u2019t drag the TV outside, pop in your headphones or look at your phone.<\/p>\n<p>This is harder than it sounds. It\u2019s hard to stay silent and present. It even takes practice, like mediation.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">UCHealth Today&#8217;s &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/category\/live-colorado\/\">Live Colorado<\/a>&#8221; section offers insight into an array of activities throughout Colorado.<\/div>\n<p>Lutz is familiar with the research, but his own experiences are what convinced him to embrace the outdoors as a therapeutic tool.<\/p>\n<p>His wife loves photography, and his kids really do enjoy being outdoors with him. They will hunt for antlers together and camp and enjoy as many activities as they can.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took my son out coyote hunting,\u201d Lutz said. \u201cIt\u2019s pitch black, and you get to watch the stars.
