Rita Whitlock is one of the quiet heroes at UCHealth Memorial Hospital<\/a>. She is a volunteer who spends a lot of time thinking about patients who might have a cold head.<\/p>\n

\u201cEveryone gets cold, you know,\u2019\u2019 said Whitlock, a longtime Colorado Springs resident.<\/p>\n

She crochets beautiful hats for cancer patients who have lost their hair after having chemotherapy, and she donates them to the Memorial Hospital Foundation which, in turn, delivers them to the Infusion Clinic, where they are offered to patients who choose from an array of colors.<\/p>\n

In the past six months, Whitlock has donated 300 hats. She sits in her \u201cwoman cave\u2019\u2019 in the lower level of her Colorado Springs home, listens to country music, and crochets away.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy kids and grandkids ask me what I want for Christmas, and I tell them to look for a sale on yarn,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cThey tell me, \u2018Mom, that\u2019s not for you,\u2019 but that\u2019s what I want.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Whitlock can, at any given time, tell you who is having a sale on yarn \u2013 Walmart, Michael\u2019s, Hobby Lobby \u2013 she knows.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a person who has to be doing things, and this takes my mind off of things and if it helps someone feel better, I\u2019m all for it,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

Nancy Cooper, who was diagnosed with breast cancer and began losing her hair in April after undergoing chemotherapy, appreciates the hats and wears them when she goes out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have any shame about being bald, but there is a little bit of vanity \u2013 I\u2019m a girl. It\u2019s not how others see me, it\u2019s how I see myself,\u201d Cooper said.<\/p>\n

She recently wore a \u00a0teal-and-white hat to an infusion appointment and \u00a0said it was heartwarming that a stranger would be so kind. This particular hat was a perfect match to her sweater, and she has enjoyed several of the Whitlock-made creations over the months.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found it loving and caring and quite giving,\u201d she said of Whitlock, whom she has not met. \u201cShe gives of her time and also her finances to help others be a little bit more comfortable. It\u2019s a fabulous option for those of us who don\u2019t want to wear wigs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitlock has spent most of her life making it a habit to help others. She has visited elderly people through Silver Key, the senior services center in Colorado Springs. She\u2019s volunteered in churches and schools, and when one of her friends goes into the hospital, she cooks for their husbands.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne guy, he called me the \u2018Pikes Peak Angel\u2019 because I make meals for the husbands when their wives go in the hospital,\u2019\u2019 Whitlock said.<\/p>\n

She started to make hats when she heard of the need for them via her teammates at a local bowling alley. And since then, she\u2019s been crocheting a couple a day.<\/p>\n

Whitlock said that she was poor growing up in Maine.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe never had nothing. A lot of our stuff came from the Salvation Army. My parents worked, but they didn\u2019t make much money,\u2019\u2019 Whitlock said.<\/p>\n

Knowing that her hats are bringing joy to patients at Memorial has been rewarding for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always enjoyed doing stuff for others. There\u2019s always someone who needs a little something,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
