{"id":75832,"date":"2024-05-16T08:02:04","date_gmt":"2024-05-16T14:02:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=75832"},"modified":"2024-05-16T08:02:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-16T14:02:04","slug":"our-stories-hillary-padilla","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/our-stories-hillary-padilla\/","title":{"rendered":"Hillary Padilla"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><figure id=\"attachment_75833\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75833\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-75833\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/05\/13075448\/Hillary-Padilla-YMEP3-web.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Hillary Padilla.\" width=\"640\" height=\"490\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75833\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hillary Padilla<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sunday lunch becomes lifesaving moment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Hillary Padilla\u2019s instincts took over during a leisurely afternoon lunch that in the blink of an eye turned into an emergency situation at a Pueblo Italian restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla, a UCHealth Parkview Medical Center surgical first assistant, was enjoying lunch at Rosario\u2019s with her fianc\u00e9 and two daughters on April 7 when she noticed Ronald Knudtson collapse to the floor in distress.<\/p>\n<p>Relying on her skills and experience, Padilla didn\u2019t hesitate to respond immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew something was wrong right away,\u201d Padilla said. \u201cThe color, he was not responding, he just was not responsive at all. He was like a pale white then started turning a purple, blueish color.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Padilla arrived to Knudtson, she began performing CPR.<\/p>\n<p>There also was another woman with a medical background from Colorado Springs dining at the restaurant that day and when they couldn\u2019t feel a pulse from Knudtson, they began doing chest compressions on him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was staying real calm, checking the pulse the whole time,\u201d Padilla said. \u201cWe did three rounds of compressions, and he started becoming responsive. We got a pulse finally and he started waking up again. His whole family was yelling his name the whole time, telling him to get up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It took more than three minutes before Knudtson came to, and as soon as he was responsive an ambulance transported him to Parkview, where he stayed for about three days before being released home.<\/p>\n<p>Padilla, who never performed these life-saving measures outside of work, said she felt enormous relief when Knudtson regained responsiveness in the restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a good feeling when the person comes through. It was a very good feeling I\u2019ll probably never forget for the rest of my life,\u201d Padilla said. \u201cEven though I do work in the operating room, it\u2019s just different. In the OR you work as a team, but when you\u2019re by yourself and with strangers, you know, I just followed the training from Parkview to help me get through this. Padilla performed lifesaving CPR on Knudtson at the Pueblo Italian restaurant in early April.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He said he was told the incident might have happened because of a mixture of medications he is on.<\/p>\n<p>On the day he collapsed he had a very low red blood count and low blood pressure, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t remember much. I ate and told my wife I feel dizzy and I\u2019m going to get up and go to the bathroom,\u201d Knudtson said. \u201cI got up, I staggered holding onto chairs, then got near the bar and I remember touching the bar and starting to fall and that\u2019s all I remember.
