{"id":74205,"date":"2024-03-14T08:30:08","date_gmt":"2024-03-14T14:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=74205"},"modified":"2024-03-14T11:03:51","modified_gmt":"2024-03-14T17:03:51","slug":"our-stories-donald-christine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/our-stories-donald-christine\/","title":{"rendered":"Donald Christine"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><figure id=\"attachment_74206\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74206\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-74206\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/02\/21090222\/DonaldChristine-YMEP-Photo.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Donald Christine\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Donald Christine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>From patient to employee<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The medical staff at UCHealth Parkview Medical Center (PMC) got Donald Christine back on his feet after suffering a major heart attack.<\/p>\n<p>Now Christine works at Parkview helping patients and providing encouragement to them when needed.<\/p>\n<p>Christine was pumping gas into his truck in 2017 and fell down on the pavement, as people behind him in the fuel line honked unaware of what was happening.<\/p>\n<p>A person from the back of the line came to check on Christine, administered CPR, and got him breathing and his heart working again.<\/p>\n<p>Christine suffered a major heart attack and was transported via ambulance to PMC where he was rushed to the cardiac wing and had surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe last thing I remember was getting gas,\u201d Christine said. \u201cI was dead on the sidewalk, basically. I woke up in an ambulance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Christine spent the next month at PMC getting better. He spent another month doing rehab at home before he began to feel like his old self again.<\/p>\n<p>A truck driver for 22 years, Christine decided to retire in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Feeling like he needed something to do following his brief retirement, he decided to go work at the hospital that cared for him five years prior.<\/p>\n<p>He was hired at PMC as a transporter in November 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy daughter is a nurse here, a registered nurse in the operating room, so she told me after I retired to come on over and do some good here,\u201d Christine said. \u201cI was just hanging out after retirement. I\u2019m too active to just sit around all day so I knew I had to do something just to stay busy and keep me healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a transporter, Christine traverses all around the five-story hospital getting patients where they need to be.<\/p>\n<p>He is a comforting presence for some in a time of uncertainty and fear in their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI try to share my experience with patients because a lot of times they\u2019re scared if they\u2019re going through a procedure or they\u2019re unsure of what\u2019s going to happen, so I try to talk to them and reassure them,\u201d Christine said. \u201cI tell them, \u2018Hey I went through it, and I feel like I\u2019m 35 again.\u2019 I just try to offer comfort because I\u2019m proof you can get better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Getting to talk with and meet new people every day is one of the aspects of the job Christine cherishes the most.<\/p>\n<p>He said he also loves all the medical staff he gets to work with daily.<\/p>\n<p>Staying active is important to Christine, and this job also allows him to do that with all the moving that\u2019s required.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get about five miles in a day. I track my steps on my phone,\u201d Christine said. \u201cI\u2019ve lost about 10 pounds since I started working here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because of what he\u2019s gone through, Christine said, he looks at life a little differently now. He got a tattoo of a skull on the inner part of his left arm to remind himself he could not be here today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I was Superman, but I got some dirt kicked in my face,\u201d he said. \u201cI got a second chance in life.
