Christmas arrived early on the progressive care unit (PCU) at UCHealth Memorial Hospital Central (MHC).<\/p>\n<p>Six days earlier, Kaylah Bowman, a complex care social worker at Memorial, met with her patient and her patient\u2019s husband. After spending nearly three months on the PCU, they were navigating incredibly challenging end-of-life decisions. With nothing more that could be done to extend the patient\u2019s life, the patient\u2019s husband had a final wish \u2013 one last Christmas with his wife.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman knows how important those final moments and memories are with loved ones, having a personal experience with loss and grief.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know the value of having positive memories at the end of life,\u201d said Bowman.<\/p>\n<p>She thought: \u201cHow can we support this family with creating final memories that are positive and try to meet that need of healing early?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman sprang into action to spearhead the family\u2019s final wish, and she set a date for their last Christmas together. She enlisted help from family and colleagues to foster a festive spirit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73021\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73021\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73021\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/04155454\/Caroling-web.webp\" alt=\"A photo of a quartet of carolers from Glen Eyrie Madrigal.\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73021\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A quartet of carolers from Glen Eyrie Madrigal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She gathered some of the patient\u2019s favorite things, and set up a Christmas tree decorated with miniature ornaments of dogs and puppies, the patient\u2019s favorite animal.<\/p>\n<p>The patient\u2019s room was \u201cdecked to the nines.\u201d Paper snowflakes hung from the ceiling. Twinkling Christmas lights and garland lined white boards. Handmade holiday decorations of gingerbread men, reindeer and holly adorned the walls.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman credits her colleagues on the PCU for spreading the holiday cheer. Nurses donned Christmas hats and brought in cookies, hot chocolate and cider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe nurses on the floor were incredible,\u201d said Bowman. \u201cThey jumped in and just engaged. Everybody came together. It was really, truly a wonderful interdisciplinary team effort.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was just so happy to have a Christmas,\u201d Bowman said of her patient. \u201cYou could tell it was her thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bowman arranged for a quartet of carolers from Glen Eyrie Madrigal to sing that day. For 30 minutes, they sang while the patient mouthed each word along with them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_73020\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-73020\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-73020\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/12\/04154734\/Kaylah-Bowman-4-web.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Jordan Moore, Kaylah Bowman and Heather Hageman\" width=\"300\" height=\"368\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-73020\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaylah Bowman (middle) with Jordan Moore (left), charge nurse, and Heather Hageman (right), nurse, both on shift that Christmas day in November.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe knew every word to those Christmas carols,\u201d Bowman said of her patient. \u201cShe was so engaged, I never saw her face so bright and shining as when those carolers were there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Silent Night began to play, mixed feelings of joy and sorrow filled the air. \u201cSleep in heavenly peace\u201d sounded different this time. There wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very powerful,\u201d said Bowman.<\/p>\n<p>Bowman is grateful for the opportunity to not only help fulfill the family\u2019s request, but also help in the healing of colleagues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it was also really healing for our nurses, because they knew the moment she left that it was ending,\u201d said Bowman. \u201cAnd it was healing for the staff to have those memories too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two days after the patient left the hospital, she passed away.
