Photo courtesy of Deb Ramsey.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Deb Ramsey\u2019s didn\u2019t seem like a problem for a vascular surgeon, and for eight long months, it wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>It was just a problem that kept getting worse.<\/p>\n<p>In February 2021, Ramsey, then 56, had her gallbladder removed. The surgery went smoothly. But when she got home, Ramsey noticed a strange, tangerine-size bruise on and around her right shin. The gallbladder surgery had done the job for her digestive system. Had it somehow damaged her right leg?<\/p>\n<p>The answer, she suspected, was \u201cno,\u201d and her primary-care doctor and, later, dermatologists, agreed. But as they prescribed antibiotics and pondered the possibilities, weeks passed, and her entire lower leg grew increasingly bruised and inflamed. Some of the bruises turned into abscesses that wouldn\u2019t heal.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when University of Colorado School of Medicine vascular surgeon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/max-wohlauer-md\/\">Dr. Max Wohlauer<\/a> got the call. Vascular surgeons are best known for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/moms-health-ordeal-feeds-daughters-passion-for-medicine\/\">procedures<\/a> on veins and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/rare-infection-of-aortic-endograft-sets-life-saving-surgery-in-motion\/\">arteries<\/a>. But they\u2019re also involved in wound care and limb salvage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWounds that typically come through my clinic are related to blood flow. I performed a history and physical and quickly determined that her blood flow was normal and something else was going on,\u201d Wohlauer said.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Angiosarcoma: a surprise diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Wohlauer saw Ramsey in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-cardiac-and-vascular-center-anschutz\/\">UCHealth Heart and Vascular Center &#8211; Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>. Ramsey had normal blood flow. But she had a wound that needed to be biopsied in the operating room. Wohlauer had an opening in his surgical schedule and did it right away. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK441983\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The biopsy revealed<\/a> an angiosarcoma, a rare cancer of the blood vessels. Wohlauer immediately referred Ramsey to the Oncology team for further evaluation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51023\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51023\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51023 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/04\/29120453\/Vascular-3-tiny-150x150.webp\" alt=\"Dr. Max Wohlauer\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Max Wohlauer<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also brought her case to the weekly sarcoma tumor board at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-cancer-center-anschutz\/\">UCHealth Cancer Care &#8211; Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>. There, medical, surgical, and radiological oncologists; radiologists; and pathologists review challenging cases and come up with treatment options. Ramsey had two options. One was to amputate the leg above the right knee. The other was the try radiation treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Ramsey, who loves to hike in Rocky Mountain National Park and elsewhere in the mountains and foothills, went with radiation therapy. CU School of Medicine oncologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/breelyn-wilky-md\/\">Dr. Breelyn Wilky<\/a> \u2013 whose <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cuanschutz.edu\/department-of-surgery\/dr.-breelyn-wilky-joins-sarcoma-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research focus<\/a> is sarcomas \u2013 led Ramsey\u2019s cancer care. She prescribed chemotherapy and radiation treatments, the latter of which CU School of Medicine radiation oncologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/ryan-lanning-md-phd-radiation-oncology\/\">Dr. Ryan Lanning<\/a> performed over the course of six weeks in fall 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Wohlauer stayed involved in Ramsey\u2019s would care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the things I love is continuity of care, getting to know patients,\u201d Wohlauer said. \u201cSo that fit with Deb, even though she didn\u2019t have a traditional vascular-specific condition. Plus, I could sense the importance for Deb to have a doctor who would stick with her throughout her illness and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Wohlauer did two surgeries to help the wounds heal, the second of which happened in November 2021.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_71356\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-71356\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-71356\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/08\/16095749\/UCHealth_DebRamsey_dogseee.webp\" alt=\"Deb Ramsey\u2019s angiosarcoma cancer diagnosis came after curious leg wounds would not heal. Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>\u2018Triumphant spirit\u2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Ramsey set a goal of dancing with her youngest son, Jason Ramsey, at his wedding that coming July. With Wohlauer\u2019s blessing, she danced away.<\/p>\n<p>When Ramsey asked him about her plans during a trip to Barbados a couple of months later, he encouraged her to make the trip. \u201cI really want to go swimming with the turtles,\u201d she added. She had open wounds at the time. Swimming in the ocean presented a real risk of infection. \u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s good to have goals,\u201d he offered but advised against it.<\/p>\n<p>In November 2022, Wohlauer performed another surgery to help her leg wounds heal.<\/p>\n<p>Months later now, as summer heats up, the wounds have finally closed. Ramsey\u2019s scans show the cancer to be undetectable. Wohlauer has given the green light for swimming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m still going to swim with the turtles,\u201d Ramsey said. \u201cI just don\u2019t have a date yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wohlauer appreciates what he sees as \u201ca triumphant spirit\u201d in this particular patient.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has overcome the odds. It\u2019s been a real journey for her. She credits Wohlauer with saving her leg \u2013 and perhaps her life.<\/p>\n<p>Wohlauer saw somebody whose rare condition had led to many specialists but no single person for whom it seemed to make sense to take the reins to guide her care. So, he decided, he would do it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe always says, \u2018It was a team effort,\u2019\u201d Ramsey said. \u201cBut I told him: \u2018You don\u2019t understand. I still have my leg because of you.
