If you\u2019re reading this, I am having a seizure\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Those are the first words on a series of notecards Clare Kavanagh, marketing specialist at UCHealth, shares with those around her.<\/p>\n<p>Diagnosed with epilepsy almost a decade ago, Kavanagh has been proactively preparing the people around her in the event of a medical emergency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been extremely fortunate to be supported by family that empowers me to understand the diagnosis and learn to accept it,\u201d Kavanagh said. \u201cAnd also learn that it\u2019s not something I can control but there are things I can do to prepare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t control that I have epilepsy. And I can\u2019t control when I have a seizure. But there are a lot of other things I can control up until that point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adapted from the Epilepsy Foundation, Kavanagh created a series of 12 notecards that walks someone through what to do if she is having a seizure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-67771 size-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee-300x225.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee-768x576.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee-150x113.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee-200x150.webp 200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/01\/10153549\/Image02eee.webp 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Kavanagh remains light-hearted in her instruction, breaking down the steps slowly. She knows those can be very intense moments, so she incorporates cues like \u201ctake a breath\u201d and \u201cit\u2019s OK\u201d on the notecards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt certainly makes me feel safe to know that the people around me are prepared,\u201d Kavanagh said. \u201cAnd I believe, at least from the response I\u2019ve heard from my coworkers, that they ended up feeling safe, being prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On September 13, those instructions were put to the test when Kavanagh had a medical emergency at work, her first seizure in over two years.<\/p>\n<p>Kavanagh\u2019s coworkers valiantly stepped in and followed her instructions \u201cto the tee.\u201d When paramedics arrived on the scene, they were impressed with how her coworkers responded.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s moments like those when you realize that the people you\u2019re around every day, you can literally trust them with your life,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s something that not everyone can say. I\u2019m certainly grateful for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kavanagh\u2019s gratitude extends to her physician, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/mark-spitz-md-neurology\/\">Dr. Mark Spitz<\/a>, neurologist and head of the adult comprehensive epilepsy program at UCHealth Neurosciences Center \u2013 Anschutz Medical Campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI recognize that I\u2019m super fortunate, I\u2019d even say privileged, to have some of the best physicians on my care team who are able to get me back to work,\u201d Kavanagh said.<\/p>\n<p>One week after her seizure, Kavanagh returned to the office. She was welcomed back with arms wide open, returning to a cadence of normalcy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that\u2019s one of the best things you can hope for as someone who has a chronic health condition,\u201d she said. \u201cYou want to be seen as an individual before you\u2019re seen as your diagnosis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kavanagh often connects with young adults who are newly diagnosed, offering advice. She advocates for disclosing medical status, so long as it doesn\u2019t impact their safety in any way. She shares resources that have helped in her journey living with epilepsy, including the ample resources available on the Epilepsy Foundation and discrete emergency accessories and medical condition indicators, such as <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.roadid.com\/pages\/healthid-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ROAD iD<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot about having epilepsy that I cannot control. But there\u2019s a lot that I can,\u201d Kavanagh said. \u201cI choose to take good care of my body. I choose to take the advice of the excellent health professionals.
