The mpox virus is part of the same family of viruses as the variola virus, the virus that causes smallpox. Mpox symptoms are similar to smallpox symptoms but are generally milder.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span><b>How does mpox spread?<\/b><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>Mpox can spread to anyone through close, personal contact, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Direct contact with mpox rash, scabs, or body fluids from a person with mpox.<\/li>\n<li>Touching objects, fabrics (clothing, bedding, or towels), and surfaces that have been used by someone with mpox.<\/li>\n<li>Contact with respiratory secretions (mucus) of someone with mpox.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span><b>Symptoms of mpox<\/b><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<ul>\n<li>Symptoms of mpox are similar to the flu, and can include:<\/li>\n<li>Fever<\/li>\n<li>Headache<\/li>\n<li>Muscle aches<\/li>\n<li>Swollen lymph nodes<\/li>\n<li>Chills<\/li>\n<li>Exhaustion<\/li>\n<li>Respiratory symptoms (like sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough)<\/li>\n<li>Rash (can look like pimples or blisters, and may be painful or itchy)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span><strong>Vaccines for mpox<\/strong><\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\">\n<p>The CDC recommends vaccines for people who have been exposed to mpox or are more likely to get mpox. <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/vaccines.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Learn more<\/a> about the vaccine protection and who is at greater risk to contract mpox.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p><strong>Please call your primary care provider or schedule a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/virtual-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Virtual Visit<\/a> if any of these apply to you:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Have been in contact with someone who tested positive for, or had symptoms of mpox <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Flu-like symptoms accompanied by a rash 1-4 days later <strong>OR<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Have a <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/poxvirus\/monkeypox\/symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rash<\/a> (can initially look like pimples or blisters and may be painful or itchy) with or without flu-like symptoms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To help protect everyone in our facilities, patients, visitors and UCHealth staff must wear a mask at all times, unless eating or drinking, in all public and patient-care areas.
