Photo Courtesy of McKayla Lee, The Southern Ute Drum.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/native-american-history-heritage\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">history of Native American tribes in Colorado<\/a> is visible today along the state\u2019s cliffs, mountains and valleys, from Ancestral Puebloan dwellings in southwest Colorado to memorial sites marking unimaginable atrocities on the Plains.<\/p>\n<p>Explore these sites and museums to learn more about American Indian culture in Colorado.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Ute Indian Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/ute-indian-museum\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ute Indian Museum<\/a>, off U.S. Highway 550 in Montrose, Colorado, celebrates American Indians who now live in Colorado and those who inhabited the state before it was ever a U.S. territory.<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\"><strong>Also check out:<\/strong> Explore the history and culture of the Colorado Ute with this <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/exhibits.historycolorado.org\/ute-tribal-paths\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online exhibition<\/a>.<\/div>\n<p>The museum is located on the original homestead of Chief Ouray, leader of the Ute people, and his wife, Chipeta. There is a memorial to Chief Ouray, Chipeta\u2019s Crypt and walking paths, teepees, and a memorial to the Spanish conquistadors who traveled through the area in 1776.<\/p>\n<p>One of its largest features is the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/exhibit\/ute-indian-museum-grounds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ute Ethnobotany Garden<\/a> that contains native plants to the Western Slope used by Colorado&#8217;s oldest residents. Photo: City of Montrose.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Southern Ute Cultural Center and Museum<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southernutemuseum.org\/visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cultural center and museum<\/a> in Ignacio, Colorado, provides visitors with a cultural experience through self-guided exhibits and galleries. Visitors may also opt for a guided tour led by staff, which takes them behind the scenes to staff-only access areas where they can view artifacts not currently on display.<\/p>\n<p>Discover the story of the Ute people, from prehistory to modern times, through interactive exhibits and life-size replicas. It preserves 200 ancient homes and ceremonial buildings of the Ancestral Puebloans. The homes and buildings have spiritual significance to many tribes. Photo by Hoard Rowe\/Chimney Rock National Monument.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Mesa Verde National Park<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mesa Verde National Park is a great place to spend a whole day <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/meve\/learn\/historyculture\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">exploring the history<\/a> of the Ancestral Pueblo people who built their community on the cliffs more than 700 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The park encompasses 52,000 acres, which you can explore on foot, either self-guided or with a scheduled tour group, or by driving through the park. Check for road closures in the park because there is ongoing construction.<\/p>\n<p>You can learn more about the park&#8217;s rich history through audio tours or podcasts available on the National Park Service website. If you like, you can listen as you hike to different outlooks or traverse along several trail systems.<\/p>\n<p>To see the dwellings up close, book <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/meve\/planyourvisit\/cliff_dwelling_tours.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a guided tour<\/a> with a ranger between May and mid-October. Tickets can be obtained up to 14 days in advance and must be purchased on recreation.gov or by calling 877.444.6777. The Step House, on Wetherill Mesa, may be toured without a ticket. The park does not accept cash.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Discover For Yourself - Canyons of the Ancients National Monument\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e1KXaE_LBaE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Canyons of the Ancients <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>About 12 miles west of Mesa Verde National Park is the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/mesaverdecountry.com\/canyons-of-the-ancients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canyons of the Ancients<\/a>. This 176,000-acre area encompasses several historic sites, dispersed camping opportunities and trails for different uses.<\/p>\n<p>Your first stop when visiting the area, operated by the Bureau of Land Management, is the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum. The center offers helpful information, including <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.blm.gov\/sites\/blm.gov\/files\/blm_co_CANM_Transportation%20Map_withCAMPINGlocations.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a map of the area<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Crow Canyon Archaeological Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Located in southwestern Colorado<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">, near Mesa Verde and the Canyons of the Ancients, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crowcanyon.org\/about-us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">center strives to empower present and future generations<\/a> by making the past accessible and relevant through archaeological research, education,<\/span>\u00a0and American Indian knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>This experience is different than traditional museum or site visits. The center offers educational opportunities through various online and in-person programs, including multi-day cultural explorations and experiential education programs for school groups, college students, teachers, and lifelong learners. Make prior reservations before visiting the campus.<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\"><strong>Also check out:<\/strong> Learn more about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/what-is-a-powwow-celebrate-indigenous-culture\/\">celebrating indigenous culture in Colorado.<\/a><\/div>\n<h2><strong>Plains Conservation Center<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Learn more about life on the Plains in the late 1800s at the Plains Conservation Center, a 1,100-acre preserve in Aurora, Colorado.<div class=\"su-pullquote su-pullquote-align-right\">Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/free-days-national-parks-monuments-historic-sites-in-colorado\/\">free days at Colorado&#8217;s national parks, monuments and historic sites<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/free-days-at-denver-cultural-institutions\/\">Denver&#8217;s cultural institutions<\/a>. <\/div>\n<p>The <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.auroragov.org\/things_to_do\/parks__open_space___trails\/nature___open_space\/nature_centers\/plains_conservation_center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Plains Conservation Center<\/a> offers maps of the area and provides a site history. Visit the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.botanicgardens.org\/land-acknowledgment\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denver Botanic Gardens events site<\/a> to register for different education programs held at the center throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>The reserve has a replica of a homestead village and a tipi camp. Photo: National Parks Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sand\/planyourvisit\/directions.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">At first glance, this site<\/a> appears to be just another shallow, grassy valley on Colorado\u2019s eastern plains, but it is actually the location of disturbing events that changed the course of history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Early on the morning of Nov. 29, 1864, about 675 U.S. volunteer soldiers under the command of Col. John M. Chivington attacked a village of about 750 Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans along Sand Creek. They drove the people out of their camp, massacring women, children and elders as they fled. After eight hours of fighting, the troops killed about 230 villagers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-6 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\"><strong>Also check out:<\/strong> The History Colorado Center, located at 1200 Broadway in Denver, features a core exhibit titled \u201c<a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.historycolorado.org\/exhibit\/sand-creek-massacre-betrayal-changed-cheyenne-and-arapaho-people-forever\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sand Creek Massacre: The Betrayal that Changed Cheyenne and Arapaho People Forever<\/a>.\u201d<\/div>\n<p>At the visitor center, you can learn more about the massacre and show respect for the lives lost.
