Photo: UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>John Gannon\u2019s story starts a long way from the giant red banner draped over an entry tunnel a few feet inside the left-field foul pole at Coors Field. But there\u2019s a connection: This season, each time a Rockies\u2019 home run ball lands on that outsized \u201cHit the Mitt\u201d banner some 375 feet from the plate, UCHealth will donate $5,000 to help the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>, an organization that helped Gannon when he really needed it.<\/p>\n<p>The grandfather of two and longtime Jefferson County Public Schools head custodian woke up one morning last July and found that he couldn\u2019t move his legs. Paramedics brought him to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>. Scans showed a mass in his lower abdomen; he was wheeled straight into surgery. Gannon, now 63, had noticed lower back pain for a couple of years but had assumed it was from doing manual work and arthritis that had crept in over time. Plus, Gannon wasn\u2019t exactly one to whine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuck it up, buttercup. Cowboy up,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s what I did, and it almost killed me.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Treatment options<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cCowboying up\u201d in the face of prostate cancer is all too common, says CU School of Medicine and UCHealth oncologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/christopher-geiger-md\/\">Dr. Christopher Geiger<\/a>, who has led Gannon\u2019s cancer treatment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do see it quite a bit, where a lot of men are diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer \u2013 often with high PSA [prostate-specific antigen] score \u2013 and not working it up any further,\u201d Geiger said. He added that pain that doesn\u2019t go away after about a week and doesn\u2019t have an obvious source should be viewed as a warning sign.<\/p>\n<p>Geiger had Gannon undergo radiation treatment and then, when Gannon declined chemotherapy infusions, prescribed biannual estrogen injections and a combination of <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.zytiga.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zytiga<\/a> (abiraterone acetate) and the corticosteroid prednisone to lower Gannon\u2019s production of androgens, hormones of which testosterone is the best known. Photo courtesy of John Gannon.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Perhaps one in four men with metastatic prostate cancer avoid such androgen-deprivation therapy due to concerns about side effects, Geiger says: \u201cThey may worry that testosterone is part of your manhood, but a lot of my patients usually do really well, and the side effects are quite minimal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The testosterone levels of a man in his 60s are typically less than half of what they were in his 20s, and they keep declining as the years pass, so there\u2019s not all that much to suppress anyway.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Learning to walk again<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Doctors weren\u2019t sure Gannon would walk again. For three straight days in his hospital bed, he focused on his feet, willing them to move \u201cto the point that I was sweating,\u201d Gannon says. On the third day, a toe finally twitched.<\/p>\n<p>An American Cancer Society grant covered his transportation to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-broomfield-hospital\/\">UCHealth Broomfield Hospital<\/a>. There Gannon would spend more than a month doing physical rehabilitation. As he regained use of his legs, rehabilitation specialists grew more optimistic about his chances of walking on his own \u2013 at least with help from the sort of walker he was using when he left UCHealth Broomfield Hospital on Aug. 30. He graduated to a rollator walker soon after that, fashioning a rope to haul it up the stairs behind him and out of his garden-level apartment in Arvada. Within a few weeks, though, he had improved enough to get by with a cane.<\/p>\n<p>Eight months later, Gannon still uses the cane when out and about but goes without it at home \u2013 even if, as he put it, \u201cit\u2019s not pretty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut every day, I\u2019m getting stronger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Gannon\u2019s PSA score, over 400 at the time of surgery, is now below 0.01 \u2013 undetectable, Geiger says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think with his aggressive surgery, radiation treatment, and ongoing treatment, he\u2019s doing awesome,\u201d Geiger said.<\/p>\n<p>Gannon is savoring every moment of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking down at the grass and not up at the roots,\u201d he said. \u201cI thank the good lord every day to be able to watch the sun come up again.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>John Gannon\u2019s story starts a long way from the giant red banner draped over an entry tunnel a few feet inside the left-field foul pole at Coors Field.
