{"id":4793,"date":"2016-05-11T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2016-05-11T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/2016\/05\/11\/be-part-of-the-art\/"},"modified":"2026-04-02T15:07:55","modified_gmt":"2026-04-02T21:07:55","slug":"be-part-of-the-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/be-part-of-the-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Be Part of the Art"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A long, lackluster hallway \u2013 a passageway used by hundreds of patients and visitors who come to Memorial Hospital Central \u2013 is about to get a creative makeover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBe Part of the Art\u2019\u2019 is an art project created by Memorial employees to enhance the look and feel of the long hallway that employees often refer to as the \u201cbowling alley.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Employees are encouraged to express themselves through art on a 3.5-inch-square card as part of festivities for Hospital Week. The cards will be threaded together and displayed in the hallway \u2013 serving as a visual reminder for patients and visitors of the commitment of employees to excellent patient care.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to bring that hallway to life and to highlight patient and staff engagement,\u2019\u2019 said the Rev. Nathan Mesnikoff, director of Spiritual Care at Memorial.<\/p>\n<p>Mesnikoff said he\u2019s been working with Kay Miller, chief nursing officer at Memorial, on the project. The fact is that each of us have these pieces that we contribute, but when we put them all together they turn into something rather glowing \u2013 the whole is greater than the sum of its parts,\u2019\u2019 Mesnikoff said.<\/p>\n<p>More than 400 cards have already been distributed and Mesnikoff has crayons and colored pencils for use, though employees are encourage to create in any medium \u2013 pastels, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, etc. Employees can write a single word on the card, or a short phrase \u2013 or simply draw a picture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very open. The idea behind all of this is for you to express how you feel about your work. This is not about who is the best artist; it\u2019s about expressing yourself and having a good time. You don\u2019t have to worry if you are not Picasso,\u2019\u2019 Mesnikoff said.<\/p>\n<p>Ron Rubin, development manager for the Memorial Hospital Foundation, said he plans to do calligraphy of UCHealth\u2019s Mission: We improve lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m happy to help with the tile project in any way that I can,\u2019\u2019 Rubin said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s done calligraphy on a few projects, including invitations for his daughter\u2019s wedding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t draw very well, but I can print,\u2019\u2019 Rubin said.<\/p>\n<p>Mesnikoff said his plan is to post the final artwork in the main hallway at Central and an appropriate location at North. It will blend into the overall goal of the hallway, which is to highlight Memorial\u2019s Professional Practice Model. The model symbolizes Memorial\u2019s beliefs, values, theories and systems for nursing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m looking forward to featuring the various elements of the Professional Practice Model in that hallway,\u2019\u2019 Mesnikoff said. \u201cThere will be different sections that correspond to the different elements in the model.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The art will enhance the appearance of the hallway and serve as a visual escort through the corridor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we have sections, it will draw people through. People will get a sense that they are not just walking down this endless hallway, but seeing different things as they go. It will create more of a sense of movement and help people through that space,\u2019\u2019 Mesnikoff said.<\/p>\n<p>Cards are available during the morning Safety Briefing in the Pyramid Room at MHC, at Central\u2019s spiritual care office on the second floor, and in the chapel at Memorial Hospital North.<\/p>\n<p>Employees are encouraged to write their names and their unit numbers on the back of the cards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to seeing all the different cards.
