He\u2019ll enroll in PIMA Medical Institute to further his education.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tarrant kept his promise, but two days after his doctor\u2019s appointment, he received shocking news. His doctor told him that he had focal segmental glomerulosclerosis \u2013 a kidney disease in which scarring occurs inside some of the tiny filters of the kidneys. In time, the scarring prevents the kidneys from adequately filtering blood. The doctor said his kidneys would shut down in six months.<\/p>\n<p>Tarrant began a routine of dialysis that lasted for three-and-a-half years and led him to University of Colorado Hospital for treatment and ultimately, in 2014, a kidney transplant at UCH. That experience changed Tarrant\u2019s life in ways that he could not have anticipated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody was so caring \u2013 they made sure that I was taken care of. They asked if I had any questions or concerns. Through the whole process &#8212; from the care that I received to being on dialysis to getting the transplant\u00a0&#8212; I really loved the doctors. I was really impressed,\u2019\u2019 Tarrant said.<\/p>\n<p>He admired the people that took care of him so much that he made a decision to try to join them. In June 2015, Tarrant left his job as a customer service representative for a major airline and joined UCHealth as a patient access representative, helping patients access care and schedule appointments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI received great care here, so I thought it might be a great place to work,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>When he saw that UCHealth was offering scholarships to advance education among employees, Tarrant decided to apply. <a href=\"https:\/\/thesource.uchealth.org\/Departments\/HR\/Benefits\/Pages\/REACH-Scholarship-Program.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The REACH<\/a> (Recognizing Educational Achievement through Careers in Health) scholarship program, an annual program of UCHealth, is designed to award medical assistant or surgical technologist certificates and degree program scholarships to eligible UCHealth employees or approved UCHealth contract employees.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/1970\/01\/28144626\/IMG_5620.webp\" alt=\"Travis Tarrant\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Travis Tarrant, a UCHealth patient access representative, helps patients access care and schedule appointments. He is the recipient of a REACH scholarship offered by UCHealth to eligible employees and contractors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>UCHealth awarded five MA and five surgical tech scholarships, which cover current education costs, such as tuition, school fees, certification test costs and books up to $15,000. The scholarship also includes up to eight hours of paid time off from work per week for educational purposes. It\u2019s one of the perks and programs for employees that contributes to UCHealth\u2019s recent designation as a \u201cGreat Place to Work,\u2019\u2019 according to a national survey of randomly selected current employees.<\/p>\n<p>Scholarship recipients include: Ike Wagner from Poudre Valley Hospital Sterile Processing;\u00a0 Angela Hunsinger from PVH Birthing Center;\u00a0 Axel Chavez from UCHealth\u2019s Patient Line; Janelle Avers, who works in the PACU at University of Colorado Hospital; Jennifer J. Sullivan from the CTRC Inpatient at UCH; Bernike Asnetty, a medical assistant at University Medicine-Anschutz; Sheena Evans, a security officer with Allied Barton; Tashina Sadler, Wound Care Clinic at Memorial Hospital; Jo-Anna Stier, who works in Outpatient Surgery at Printers Park in Colorado Springs; and Tarrant.<\/p>\n<p>Tarrant will now enroll in a nine-month <a href=\"https:\/\/pmi.edu\/programs\/certificate\/medical-assistant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Pima Medical Institute<\/a> program to become a medical assistant. Without the scholarship program, he said, he could not have pursued this education opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was pretty excited \u2013 I still am,\u2019\u2019 Tarrant said. \u201cNot knowing how many people were going to apply, I just figured if it was meant, it was meant.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>With the MA certification, he said, he\u2019ll be able to provide \u201cthat one-stop shopping for IR (interventional radiology) patients. I\u2019ll be able to schedule the patient for the clinic and the procedure and also room those same patients as they come into the clinic.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Tarrant said he has always been a caring person, but when he\u2019s at work he said he listens intently to patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just listen and hear their need and try to take care of what they need. If I\u2019ve scheduled them for an appointment and they are satisfied, that means you\u2019ve met their need, which means they\u2019ll call again or come back again,\u2019\u2019 Tarrant said.<\/p>\n<p>Having had a kidney transplant, Tarrant said, he has a \u201cdifferent perspective \u2013 almost like a second chance.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He said that his goal is to \u201ctry to change the world, even if it is just one person.\u2019\u2019 This fall, he\u2019ll start school and create his own destiny to become a medical assistant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter that, I\u2019m not sure what I\u2019ll do \u2013 maybe nursing,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Travis Tarrant believes that nothing happens by chance.
