Go to the website for the specific &#8220;free day&#8221; happening that month.<\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<p>Here\u2019s a roundup from the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/state\/co\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Park Service of National Parks, National Monuments and National Historic Sites<\/a> in Colorado that you can enjoy on a free day or any time of year.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"list_left__subtitle\">Amache National Historic Site<\/h2>\n<p>Granada, Colorado<\/p>\n<p>The newest addition to National Park Service sites in Colorado, the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/amch\/planyourvisit\/basicinfo.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amache National Historic Site<\/a>, is a somber place that commemorates a bleak period in U.S. history. Located in southeastern Colorado, Amache was one of 10 incarceration camps where U.S. leaders imprisoned Japanese Americans during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>There are no fees to visit Amache on any day of the year, and few buildings remain from the time when more than 10,000 people were forced to live at Amache from 1942 to 1945.<\/p>\n<p>But horticulturists have recently discovered survivor roses from the time when Japanese Americans lived at Amache. Japanese people around the world are known for their remarkable gardens, and the roses that survived in hostile, sandy soil for decades at Amache are a testament to the strength and perseverance of those who were forced to live at Amache.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.org\/2022\/05\/22\/the-camp-amache-rose-is-blooming-heres-what-it-looks-like\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Read about these remarkable Amache roses<\/a> that are blooming again. Currently, Amache is home to a cemetery, a monument, building foundations, and landscaping. Visitors can download a self-guided tour. The National Park Service is working closely with the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/amache.org\/amache-preservation-society\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-bs-toggle=\"modal\" data-bs-target=\"#myModal\" data-toggle=\"modal\" data-target=\"#myModal\" data-remote=\"\/common\/commonspot\/customcf\/modals\/modal_intercept.cfm?targetURL=https%3A%2F%2Famache.org%2Famache-preservation-society%2F\">Amache Preservation Society<\/a> to provide visitor services.<\/p>\n<h2>Bent&#8217;s Old Fort National Historic Site<\/h2>\n<p>La Junta, Colorado<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/beol\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bent&#8217;s Old Fort features<\/a> a reconstructed 1840s adobe fur trading post on the mountain branch of the Santa Fe Trail where traders, trappers, travelers, and the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes came together in peaceful terms for trade. Photo courtesy of the National Park Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Montrose, Colorado<\/p>\n<p>Big enough to be overwhelming, still intimate enough to feel the pulse of time, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/blca\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Black Canyon of the Gunnison exposes<\/a> you to some of the steepest cliffs, oldest rock, and craggiest spires in North America. With two million years to work, the Gunnison River, along with the forces of weathering, has sculpted this vertical wilderness of rock, water, and sky. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/colorado-canyons-from-the-royal-gorge-to-glenwood-to-the-black-canyon-of-the-gunnison\/\">Learn more about canyons throughout Colorado<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Colorado National Monument<\/h2>\n<p>Fruita, Colorado<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/colm\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado National Monument preserves<\/a> one of the grand landscapes of the American West. But this treasure is much more than a monument. Towering monoliths exist within a vast plateau and canyon panorama. You can experience sheer-walled, red rock canyons along the twists and turns of Rim Rock Drive, where you may spy bighorn sheep and soaring eagles.<\/p>\n<h2>Curecanti National Recreation Area<\/h2>\n<p>Gunnison, Colorado<\/p>\n<p>Curecanti is a series of <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/cure\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">three reservoirs along the once-wild Gunnison River<\/a>. The reservoirs that makeup Curecanti today are a destination for water-based recreation high in the Rocky Mountains. There are no reservations to visit or limit on the number of visitors in the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/grsa\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">park and preserve<\/a>, but there is currently limited capacity in the visitor center. Enjoy Trail Ridge Road \u2013 which crests at over 12,000 feet including many overlooks to experience the subalpine and alpine worlds \u2013 along with over 300 miles of hiking trails, wildflowers, wildlife, starry nights, and fun times.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/get-out-there-10-great-hikes-in-rocky-mountain-national-park\/\">Read about great hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park.<\/a> Many of these routes are great for snowshoeing during the winter.<\/p>\n<p>Please keep in mind that reservations are required to visit Rocky Mountain National Park during the busy summer and fall months.<\/p>\n<h2>Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site<\/h2>\n<p>Kiowa County, Colorado<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/sand\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Sand Creek Massacre<\/a>: profound, symbolic, spiritual, controversial, a site unlike any other in America. As 675 cavalrymen came around a prairie bend, the camps of Chiefs Black Kettle, White Antelope, and Left Hand lay in the valley before them. Chaotic, horrific, tumultuous, and bloody, the events of November 29, 1864 changed the course of history.<\/p>\n<p>Here are other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/native-american-tribes-in-colorado-sites-centers\/\">Native American sites and centers<\/a> in Colorado.<\/p>\n<h2>Yucca House National Monument<\/h2>\n<p>Cortez, Colorado<\/p>\n<p>Through a continuing tradition of public and private cooperation, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/yuho\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Yucca House National Monument preserves<\/a> one of the largest archeological sites in SW Colorado. The unexcavated nature of the site preserves its integrity and beauty for future generations of scientists and visitors.
