At the intersection of struggle and kindness, Ivy Sanchez met Shane Jewell.<\/p>\n

The road for Sanchez, 33, is rocky right now. Four months ago, she moved with her five\u00a0children, ages 11 months to 11 years, from Colorado Springs to Raton, N.M., to care for\u00a0her mother, who has Stage 4 COPD<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In mid-August, without explanation, Sanchez\u2019s blood pressure plummeted. She went to\u00a0a hospital for a week, had all kinds of tests done and one showed she had an 8-centimeter tumor in her breast. Breast cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn\u2019t wrap my head around it. I didn\u2019t want to believe it, it was so hard,\u2019\u2019 Sanchez\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

In no time, Sanchez was making weekly trips to UCHealth Memorial Hospital North<\/a> to\u00a0receive chemotherapy. The sessions, which go on for six months, last five hours and\u00a0are aimed at eliminating the tumor, which has shrunk by nearly two-thirds after four\u00a0sessions.<\/p>\n

On her first day of chemo, Ivy was afraid. The last thing she expected that day was for a\u00a015-year-old Boy Scout to bring her comfort. Jewell, a sophomore at Liberty High School<\/a> and member of Scouts BSA Troop 246 out of St. Gabriel the Archangel parish, was delivering on his Eagle Scout project.<\/p>\n

After his grandmother, Catherine Tsuma, died in April 2018 of pancreatic cancer, Jewell\u00a0had no doubt that his Eagle Scout project would be aimed at helping people with\u00a0cancer.<\/p>\n

\u201cI wanted to help and give back to that community,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI knew that I would try to\u00a0do anything that I possibly could to ease someone\u2019s pain.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Jewell submitted the idea for his project, which was to fill bags with items that would\u00a0bring comfort: a blanket, crossword puzzles, word search booklets, pencils, fuzzy socks, Jolly\u00a0Ranchers (Ivy\u2019s favorite candy), ChapStick , stress ball, notebook\u2013 and a handwritten note from a Scout.<\/p>\n

Jewell raised $1,200 for the items by spreading the word on social media. He then\u00a0shopped at a fabric store and dollar stores, filling up shopping carts with enough to fill\u00a050 bags with goodies for cancer patients.\u00a0He gathered a crew of Scouts to help him fill the bags. He asked his father, Dustin\u00a0Jewell, a retired Marine, to color images on the hand-written notes that were included in\u00a0the bags. When the bags were filled, Shane and family, delivered them to Memorial Hospital North.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s when Ivy Sanchez\u2019s first day of chemotherapy turned for the better, when Shane\u00a0handed her a pink bag of goodness.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was my first day of chemo and I was scared out of my mind. I didn\u2019t know it was\u00a0going to be freezing in there and thank God, I got a bag with a blanket in there,\u2019\u2019\u00a0Sanchez said. \u201cI was very thankful for that and it lifted my spirits so much on the first\u00a0day.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

She\u2019s had three more appointments since and for each one, she\u2019s carried the bag that\u00a0Shane and the crew of Scouts put together. She does word searches and crossword\u00a0puzzles during the five-hour infusion treatments.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank God it has not spread to my internal organs or my bone marrow,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cMy\u00a0body is reacting really well with it (the chemo).\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

A self-described jack-of-all-trades, Sanchez has worked a variety of jobs, including nine\u00a0years for the National Rifle Association, as a manager at Wendy\u2019s and as a\u00a0housekeeper. Since her diagnosis Aug. 23, 2021, her children have been enrolled in\u00a0online school so they can travel with her to Colorado Springs for treatments.<\/p>\n

Sanchez advises all women ages 40 and older to get a yearly mammogram and, if there is a history of breast cancer in the family, to get regular mammograms before the age of 40. Her tumor was discovered through imaging scans while she was in the hospital. At\u00a0the time, she was breastfeeding her youngest child and noticed that her breast had\u00a0become hard, but she thought it was a result of breastfeeding.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour breasts get hard when you breast feed, and I thought it would go away,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n

Shane Jewell has been in Scouts since the first grade, and he is thrilled to be an Eagle\u00a0Scout and he\u2019ll forever know that his work mattered.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing into my project, I knew exactly what I wanted to do, and I was hoping for this\u00a0result, to help someone\u2019s life. I\u2019m happy that I can help,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI\u2019m glad that I could\u00a0do something.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n

Sanchez said cancer has made her see life differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou appreciate life way more. You don\u2019t realize how much stuff you take for granted.\u00a0I\u2019m taking care of my mom and it\u2019s hard. I\u2019ve got my five kids. \u201cI\u2019m trying to stay positive\u00a0and look at all the positive and just keep trucking.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
