He had been fighting the virus since Sept. 12, and during a period when he was improving in late September, Henry wanted to share his story with the public. His key message: &#8220;Get the shot.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>From his hospital bed in the intensive care unit at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-greeley-hospital\/\">UCHealth Greeley Hospital<\/a>, Earl Henry, 60, said his struggle to breathe after he became infected with COVID-19, was like a herd of elephants sitting on his chest, or being buried alive \u2013 something he knows about firsthand.<\/p>\n<p>As a water and sewer pipeline construction worker, the walls of ditches caved in on him three times.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can breathe out, but you can\u2019t breathe in,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>That, he said, is what COVID-19 feels like.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery time you try to breathe in the dirt keeps squeezing around you. That&#8217;s what it felt like \u2013 like I was being suffocated.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Not too long ago, Henry thought all of the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cdphe.colorado.gov\/covid-19\/data\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hullabaloo about COVID-19<\/a> was overblown.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was in \u201cthe lead with the doubters,\u2019\u2019 when the pandemic began. \u00a0\u201cNow I\u2019m standing in the back of the line with my hat in my hand. I have to admit I was wrong \u2014 100% wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry was among those skeptical of the vaccine.\u00a0 &#8220;I doubted the vaccines and everything the media and everyone were saying,\u201d he said. \u201cI thought it was a circus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then in early September, he became very sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI usually get two bad colds, one in the fall and one in the spring, and that\u2019s what it felt like. Photos courtesy of Earl Henry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Henry thought he had taken plenty of precautions to protect himself from COVID-19, but admitted in September 2021 that he should have been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no immune system and have diabetes \u2014 two of the biggest factors that will take you out,\u201d Henry said during his September 2021 interview. \u201cIt didn\u2019t take me out, but it\u2019s working real close on trying to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry went to the emergency room at Greeley Hospital on Sept. 12, the second time in a little more than 24 hours. This time he was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, where he was closely monitored and given oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went downhill good for a while,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was an hour-by-hour deal on whether I\u2019d be ventilated or not. Photo: UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAt one point, I didn\u2019t know if I was coming or going, whether I was upright or downright,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been through a lot of things in my life and I\u2019d take a lot of what I\u2019ve been through over just two days of what I\u2019ve done in here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Henry knew it is everyone\u2019s personal choice on whether to vaccinate or not vaccinated, but he had this advice:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you think it&#8217;s right, wrong, or indifferent, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/infectious-diseases\/coronavirus-covid-19\/covid-19-vaccine\/\">get the shot<\/a>. A needle poke in the arm beats the heck out of the ICU and wondering if you\u2019re going to make it to see the next morning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is nothing to mess with. I thought it was no big deal, but I learned real fast and real quick it is one heck of a big deal.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He knew that a lot of people do consider coronavirus a serious illness but he says it is a nasty, dangerous virus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, it kills, and that\u2019s a known fact and people are not taking it serious enough, and I\u2019m one of them. Looking back, knowing what I know now, I would have had two shots, and maybe even headed for the third one. If you listen to what doctors say and what the experts say \u2014 get the shots, do the masks, washing your hands, sanitizing \u2014 we can&#8217;t do enough to slow this down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more everyone does that, the sooner and faster we can slow this down.
