Photo: Getty Images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A doctor who grew up on a horse farm and used ivermectin for animals has a stern warning for people who think they should take the drug for COVID-19: Don\u2019t do it.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not an antiviral drug. It&#8217;s not designed or meant to be a treatment for COVID-19,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/george-l-hertner-md-emergency-medicine\/\">Dr. George Hertner<\/a>, chief of emergency medicine for UCHealth in southern Colorado. &#8220;My big messages are get a vaccine and wear a mask.\u00a0 Trust your healthcare provider not social media for your healthcare decisions.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/consumers\/consumer-updates\/ivermectin-and-covid-19\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued stern warnings about the egregious and misleading social media promotions of Ivermectin for COVID-19:<\/a> \u201cYou are not a horse. You are not a cow. Seriously, y\u2019all. Stop it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Even the drug\u2019s manufacturer, <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merck.com\/news\/merck-statement-on-ivermectin-use-during-the-covid-19-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Merck, has warned people not to use Ivermectin for humans who are suffering from COVID-19 or worried about getting it.<\/a> Merck\u2019s researchers warned that there is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cNo scientific basis for potential therapeutic effect against COVID-19.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cNo meaningful evidence\u2026for clinical efficacy in patients with COVID-19.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>And \u201ca concerning lack of safety data\u201d on the use of ivermectin related to COVID-19.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Certain forms of ivermectin are approved in the U.S. to treat or prevent parasites in animals. This includes pour-on, injectable, paste and &#8220;drench&#8221; forms. Ivermectin tablets are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human use at very exact doses to treat some parasitic worms. There are also topical (on the skin) forms for head lice and skin conditions like rosacea.<\/p>\n<p>Ivermectin is not approved to prevent or treat COVID-19 and the The\u00a0American Medical Association (AMA), American Pharmacists Association (APhA), and American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP)\u00a0<strong><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/click.email.uchealth.org\/?qs=7bc8a42da3fdca4c5c808469bcce1648db9ff201a891c8ae8f6451679eea95bdb643ad9d0a17ffb869e24cbce1dc012e11f230b89969fc7ea621d3d9d137d8b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strongly oppose the ordering, prescribing, or dispensing of ivermectin to prevent or treat COVID-19 outside of a clinical trial<\/a>. <\/strong>The anti-parasitic ivermectin, with antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties, has now been tested in small <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8248252\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clinical trials<\/a> to determine whether it is effective in treating COVID-19. More research on the effectiveness of ivermectin is needed.<\/p>\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also warns that ivermectin is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.cdc.gov\/#\/details?url=https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2021\/han00449.asp\">not approved<\/a> for treatment of COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Hertner, who sees patients in UCHealth ERs, grew up on a farm and is familiar with ivermectin and its intended uses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up giving animals ivermectin to remove worms from their intestinal tract,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cYou give this drug to pigs; you give this drug to sheep.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18029\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18029\" style=\"width: 187px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18029\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/08\/17094234\/hertner.webp\" alt=\"Dr. George Hertner's photo\" width=\"187\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/08\/17094234\/hertner.webp 187w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/08\/17094234\/hertner-111x150.webp 111w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18029\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. George Hertner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hertner says some of his patients have become upset when he declined to prescribe Ivermectin, which is sold at farm and ranch stores and from internet suppliers. But, ivermectin should only be used for humans in rare cases when a person has parasites like lice and ringworm.<\/p>\n<p>Hertner said ivermectin should never be prescribed for patients suffering from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the right time or situation to prescribe it,\u2019\u2019 Hertner said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/richard-zane-md-emergency-medicine\/\">Dr. Richard Zane<\/a>, executive director of emergency services and chief innovation officer for UCHealth, echoed Hertner\u2019s stern warnings about the dangers of ivermectin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 is a virus, not a parasite. Anyone suggesting you take it is trying to harm you on purpose,\u201d said Zane, who is also <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/deans-office\/cu-med-today\/profiles\/disruptor-and-innovator-emergency-medicine-s-richard-zane\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine<\/a> at <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Colorado School of Medicine<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is unethical and immoral for anyone to recommend this medicine for COVID-19. There is zero evidence that it works in any way, shape or form,\u201d Zane said. \u201cAnything you hear from anybody as a proponent for ivermectin is invented or designed to mislead or hurt you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The best way to stay safe and healthy is to get a vaccine to prevent COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>Health experts at the FDA have warned that taking ivermectin in large doses can cause side effects including \u2018skin rash, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, facial or limb swelling, neurologic adverse events, sudden drop in blood pressure, severe skin rash potentially requiring hospitalization and liver injury.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Despite the warnings, people are buying the livestock version of the drug and self-medicating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust think about it,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Hertner said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to a livestock store, getting something off the shelf that is built to go into say a 2,000-pound animal and you\u2019re trying to figure out how much you should give yourself.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Some patients who have taken ivermectin end up in the emergency room, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are desperate times, people are worried, people are scared,\u2019\u2019 said Hertner, who is perplexed that people would take an unproven, potentially unsafe treatment intended to deworm animals but not get vaccinated, despite study after study that proves they are safe.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A doctor who grew up on a horse farm and used ivermectin for animals has a stern warning for people who think they should take the drug for COVID-19: Don\u2019t do it. &#8220;It&#8217;s not an antiviral drug.
