Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Misinformation about infertility and COVID-19 vaccines has prevented countless young women from getting vaccines.<\/p>\n<p>And, as the highly transmissible delta variant causes dangerous spikes in cases of COVID-19, medical experts urgently are delivering a clear message to young women and any other eligible people who haven\u2019t yet been immunized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGet your vaccine,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/molly-lyn-hoss-md-family-medicine\/\">Dr. Molly Hoss<\/a>, a proud mom of a year-old daughter and a family medicine doctor who has delivered hundreds of babies during her career.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of data showing that the COVID-19 vaccine doesn\u2019t cause infertility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also issued a <a id=\"\" href=\"\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/pregnant-or-breastfeeding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recommendation for pregnancy and vaccines.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Hoss\u2019 daughter, Juliana, now 1, was born last July during the first months of the pandemic before vaccines had been developed. But, the moment Hoss became eligible, she received her vaccine to prevent COVID-19 at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>, where she delivers babies and cares for other patients. Hoss also sees patients of all ages at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-family-medicine-a-f-williams-central-park\/\">UCHealth A.F. Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hoss had done her research and learned that <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nejm.org\/doi\/full\/10.1056\/nejmoa2104983\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">COVID-19 vaccines were safe for pregnant women.<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/should-pregnant-women-get-covid-19-vaccines\/\">Learn more about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for pregnant women<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>As a bonus, Hoss was thrilled to pass antibodies to the coronavirus on to Juliana through her breastmilk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJuliana is my world. I want to do everything I can to protect her,\u201d Hoss said.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Hoss hopes to get pregnant soon again. Photo courtesy of Dr. Molly Hoss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Researchers have also monitored sperm counts for men who received the vaccines compared to those who did not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s no difference,\u201d Hoss said. \u201cExperts have also tested ovarian reserves and function before and after the vaccine and they also showed no difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEarly on, we knew women could get pregnant (after getting COVID-19 vaccines) and nothing harmful was happening to them,\u201d Hoss said. \u201cPlenty of my patients have gotten pregnant after getting vaccinated. And, I\u2019m planning on getting pregnant and I\u2019m not worried at all about the COVID-19 vaccine\u2019s effect on my fertility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m more worried about my age,\u201d said Hoss, who is 36. (Fertility or the ability to get pregnant does decline with age.)<\/p>\n<p>The medical experts in the U.S. who advise doctors on issues related to maternal health, the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, or ACOG<\/a>, underscore Hoss\u2019 advice on COVID-19 vaccines and infertility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaims linking COVID-19 vaccines to infertility are unfounded and have no scientific evidence supporting them,\u201d write ACOG experts.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.acog.org\/clinical\/clinical-guidance\/practice-advisory\/articles\/2020\/12\/covid-19-vaccination-considerations-for-obstetric-gynecologic-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The ACOG experts recommend vaccination for all eligible people who are pregnant or are planning to get pregnant.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Experts at the <a id=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-nCoV\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/a> <a id=\"\" href=\"\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/pregnant-or-breastfeeding.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">echo the ACOG guidelines regarding COVID-19 vaccines and infertility.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf trying to get pregnant now or in the future, would-be parents can receive a COVID-19 vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is currently no evidence that any vaccines, including COVID-19 vaccines, cause female or male fertility problems or problems getting pregnant,\u201d the CDC experts say.<\/p>\n<p>Hoss points out that some women can notice a change in their menstrual cycle soon after getting the COVID-19 vaccine, but these changes are temporary.\u00a0 You can also notice menstrual changes after getting Covid too.\u00a0 Both of these are due to an inflammatory response.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s short-lived and it goes back to normal,\u201d Hoss said. \u201cOur reproductive systems go back to normal after getting vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoss has learned a great deal being pregnant herself and caring for patients of all ages during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40969\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40969\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-40969\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2021\/08\/10144651\/UCHealth_DrMollyHoss0043-tiny.webp\" alt=\"Dr. Molly Hoss and her family. Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Giving birth during a pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Hoss was in her second trimester when the pandemic began sweeping across the U.S. in the spring of 2020. Medical experts soon learned that pregnant women could become especially sick if they got COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>So, Hoss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/giving-birth-during-a-pandemic-new-babies-bring-joy-and-hope-in-quiet-hospitals\/\">did her final delivery on April 5<\/a>. Photo courtesy of Dr. Molly Hoss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the final weeks of Hoss\u2019 pregnancy, Juliana had settled into the breech position, meaning her head was face-up in Hoss\u2019 belly, not the ideal position for an uncomplicated birth. Hoss went to extraordinary measures to encourage Juliana to flip. She tried swimming and doing handstands, neither of which prompted Juliana to turn. Hoss\u2019 medical provider then tried to manually turn Juliana. But, she stayed put. Photo courtesy of Dr. Molly Hoss.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And her message about COVID-19 is utterly clear. The illness can be very serious for people of all ages. Getting vaccinated is the best way to stay safe.<\/p>\n<p>Hoss has had plenty of patients get severely ill from COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe virus is dangerous. I have seen the long-term side effects from the virus that have impaired people\u2019s lives,\u201d Hoss said. \u201cI\u2019ve had patients lose their jobs and their housing after getting COVID-19 because they\u2019re weak, have to be on oxygen or have had neurologic effects,\u201d Hoss said.<\/p>\n<p>She said the illness affects people very differently. Some people have mild illnesses, while others become critically ill and die or suffer for many months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have patients who got COVID over a year ago and they are still on oxygen. It\u2019s not something to take lightly,\u201d Hoss said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, for some people, there are temporary side effects from the COVID-19 vaccine, but none are as bad as getting COVID-19,\u201d she said. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/covid-19-side-effects-are-normal-what-to-expect-when-you-get-your-vaccine\/\">Read more about the normal side effects of getting a COVID-19 vaccine.<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Vaccines keep young women \u2014 and their babies \u2014 safe from COVID-19<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>During the final months of her pregnancy, Hoss had to be very careful since she knew how poorly some pregnant women were doing if they got COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPregnant women are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19, and additionally, women who do get sick from COVID, are at increased risk for pre-term birth,\u201d Hoss said.<\/p>\n<p>To stay safe, she and her husband cocooned at their home near Boulder while both worked remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Hoss breastfed Juliana. Photo by Cyrus McCrimmon for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI knew that my baby would get antibodies to COVID-19,\u201d said Hoss, who continues to pump her milk to share the protection and optimal nutrition of human milk with Juliana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve continued pumping.
