Ideas included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A redesigned intensive care room designed to promote comfort and healing<\/li>\n<li>An autonomous robot system to deliver meals throughout the hospital<\/li>\n<li>A pair of glasses and app designed to help staff prioritize patient needs<\/li>\n<li>A watch to monitor cardiac arrest patients as they recover at home<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The challenge was part of a partnership between the <a href=\"https:\/\/innovation.svvsd.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Innovation Center of St. Vrain Valley Schools<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/\">UCHealth<\/a> that aims to inspire future innovators. The team included: Jocelyn Gunn from Niwot High School, Alex Miller and Ryan Velarde from Erie High School and Mia Novick from Longmont High School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project was an opportunity to see a different side of health care that I\u2019ve never really seen before. I\u2019ve always been super passionate about biology and medicine, but I\u2019ve never really considered the technical aspect that goes into behind the scenes,\u201d Gunn said. \u201cSeeing that aspect was sort of a challenge at first, to incorporate that into the design. It was really interesting to see those two fields coming together and what that means for the health care field.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Velarde said the competition opened a new frontier of thought for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up building things and designing things,\u201d Velarde said. \u201cThis was a real eye-opener for me on how complicated the health care profession really is. The team included: Jocelyn Gunn from Niwot High School, Alex Miller and Ryan Velarde from Erie High School and Mia Novick (not pictured) from Longmont High School.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The four groups spent a year collaborating, researching and designing their concepts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSt. Vrain Valley students studied the challenges faced by health care today and explored ways to create new solutions by approaching a challenge using the scientific process; creativity, being innovative and fearlessly approaching a problem in a new way,\u201d said Dr. Richard Zane, UCHealth\u2019s\u00a0chief innovation officer and professor and chair of emergency medicine at CU School of Medicine. \u201cThrough this unique partnership, UCHealth offered students \u2013 our future innovators, scientists, researchers, clinicians and patient experience leaders \u2013 a chance to learn from our experts.
