This summer, though, is anything but normal.<\/p>\n<p>The coronavirus pandemic forced closures and cancelations at Colorado\u2019s best musical venues. In a scramble to keep musicians afloat, concerts went virtual \u2014 like most all other social interactions. Now, the classic drive-in theater is becoming one of the safest and best places to feel the beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is trying to adapt and figure out new ways to survive,\u201d said Greta Cornett, president of <a href=\"https:\/\/focoma.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fort Collins Musicians Association<\/a> (FoCoMA), a nonprofit to support local musicians.<\/p>\n<p>FoCoMA\u2019s signature event, Fort Collins Music eXperiment (FoCoMX,) was set to release its lineup for its annual two-day April event when the novel coronavirus swept the world. Photo by Backstage Flash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe had challenges and learning curves,\u201d Cornett explained.\u00a0She said the association is working to keep musicians and crews safe, while the drive-in offers safety through\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/when-will-the-coronavirus-social-distancing-end\/\">social distancing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/u\/1\/d\/e\/2PACX-1vTiXurlgtn76BblhdGCRoy0KpUAygfVKu6Ry6XNyy4ZAj2S7BuIM-5D_MX6hudJqSv0eqnqCfOEnO-4\/pub\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Space is left between each vehicle<\/a> to allow room for physical distancing and for patrons to set up chairs, blankets or have room to dance.<\/p>\n<p>And if you can find that old boom box, bring it along to give you a little extra sound boost.<\/p>\n<p>To cut down on lines, concert goers order food through an app. When it&#8217;s ready, they get a text to come pick it up. Photo by Backstage Flash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>Other drive-in music opportunities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Not all drive-in theaters are getting live music, but they are still bringing favorite bands to the big screens for people to get out and enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>On July 25, Blake Shelton will appear at four Colorado drive-in screens: Holiday Twin Drive-In, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stardrivein.com\/whats-playing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Montrose\u2019s Star Drive-In<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stardrivein.com\/whats-playing.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monte Vista\u2019s Star Drive-In<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comanchedrivein.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Buena Vista\u2019s Comanche Drive-In<\/a>. It\u2019s part of the Encore Live Drive-In Nights, which is continuing to offer live music after a successful Garth Brooks concert in June.<\/p>\n<p>Other venues around the country are also testing this new \u201cdrive-in\u201d idea. For example, Carolina\u2019s Charlotte Motor Speedway plans to create a drive-in concert setting for The Avett Brothers show on Aug. 29.\u00a0And this month, Michael W. Photo by Backstage Flash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Bands like Alan Jackson, The Eli Young Band and the Davisson Brothers Band all jumped on the drive-in concert bandwagon, holding concerts last month. And Christian bands, such as Newsboys and TobyMac, also have utilized the new outdoor venues.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Outdoor venue opportunities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>For those who want to get out of their vehicles \u2014 and do it safely by maintaining physical distance and wearing masks \u2014 there are now other outdoor music opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Some establishments with outdoor seating have reopened for live music.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCapacity is still limited, but we are seeing now a lot of local venues, if they have outdoor space, doing outdoor concerts,\u201d Cornett said.<\/p>\n<p>The historic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themishawaka.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mishawaka Amphitheatre<\/a> in the Poudre Canyon has regular \u201csocial distancing seated shows\u201d that includes bands as well as movies, said General Manager Dan Mladenik.<\/p>\n<p>People aren\u2019t elbow-to-elbow anymore at these spots but rather book a table, and remain there except when they need to use the bathroom.\u00a0At Mishawaka, there are 26 tables, which hold 128 people, much less than the venue&#8217;s usual 1,000-person capacity, Mladenik said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou buy the whole table \u2014 four-, six-, or eight-tops \u2014 and bring your people with you,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are not making money with these concerts but are happy to be doing it. Photo by Backstage Flash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>How to support music <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to change everything, including the music industry,\u201d Cornett said about COVID. \u201cWe were the first to shut down and we will probably be the last to open. If you can support your favorite musicians, then support them. One of the best ways to do that is buying their merchandise, as it goes directly to them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Besides merchandise purchases, many local venues \u2014 who also are struggling to stay alive \u2014 are offering gift certificates to support them now but can be used later when they are able to reopen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMusic is the soundtrack of all of our lives,\u201d Cornett said. \u201cI can\u2019t imagine a world without it.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>(Editor&#8217;s note: All concert details within this article are subject to change because of the coronavirus pandemic.)
