Photo courtesy of Dr. Nancy Madinger.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to thinking about safety concerns specifically related to the COVID-19 pandemic, Madinger encourages people venturing into the outdoors to be mindful of precautions they should take all the time.<\/p>\n<p>Bring plenty of food, water, warm clothing and first aid gear. Hike or backpack with a buddy. Tell people precisely where you are going and when you expect to return.<\/p>\n<p>These basic safety measures are more important this year than ever before because hikers, climbers and backpackers don\u2019t want to put others at risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe No. 1 consideration if people are going into the outdoors is to be aware that if they run into trouble, first responders are going to have to come and rescue them,\u201d said Madinger, who is also a professor at the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/medschool.cuanschutz.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">University of Colorado School of Medicine<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-at-university-of-colorado-anschutz-medical-campus\/\">Anschutz Medical Campus<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone should be conservative in the risks they take. Colorado tourism managers also are giving guidance to visitors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.com\/CareForColorado\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Planning is paramount in 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are going into the backcountry, what are the possibilities for finding a campsite? And some places are very crowded. For example, in Yellowstone, people are quite close together,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Even in the outdoors, Madinger says people should continue to keep their distance from others outside of their family or group. Avoid crowded parking lots, trail heads and campgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t stand right next to somebody. Wear a mask or bandanna. Some U.S. Forest Service campgrounds are closed, while others require reservations.<\/p>\n<p>And, some bathrooms, camp stores or other facilities may not be open this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA number of backcountry ranger stations where you might normally get information could be closed,\u201d Madinger said.<\/p>\n<p>Plan to do considerable research before you head out into the wilderness. Photo courtesy of Colorado Parks and Wildlife\/ Dustin Doskocil.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIn general, we don\u2019t think that outdoor activities spread the virus,\u201d Madinger said. \u201cIf you can maintain a little distance, being outdoors with the air movement should be quite safe. Any droplets (containing the virus that causes COVID-19) should get dispersed by the air movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you plan well and bring safety gear, getting out into nature this summer should bring great rewards. In addition to finding some solitude, hiking and backpacking are great for your health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWalking uphill is great exercise, especially with a pack,\u201d Madinger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlan ahead. Figure out how to get out if you have a problem and do your best to stay away from people,\u201d she said. \u201cOtherwise it\u2019s perfectly safe and healthy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here is some specific information about camping in Colorado\u2019s state parks, national forests and national parks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Tips for camping in National Park Service areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Colorado is home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/state\/co\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13 National Parks, National Monuments, National Historic Sites, Trails and National Recreation Areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32808\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32808\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32808\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2020\/06\/30115554\/hiking-GoldenGateCanyonStatePark-Doskocil-tiny.webp\" alt=\"Camping in Colorado durnig COVID-19 can be a great escape. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/ticket\/facility\/300013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to make a reservation for a visit to hike or see the sights in Rocky Mountain. (If you are able to get a reservation for a day pass and you want information about hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/get-out-there-10-great-hikes-in-rocky-mountain-national-park\/\">here<\/a>.)<\/p>\n<p>It will be almost impossible to find a campsite in Rocky Mountain&#8217;s campgrounds this summer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Only Moraine Park and Glacier Basin Campgrounds partially opened on June 4,\u00a0with approximately half of the campsites available for reservations.\u00a0 Those sites are booked through the end of August,&#8221; said Rocky Mountain National Park spokeswoman, Kyle Patterson. &#8220;Aspenglen, Timber Creek and Longs Peak Campgrounds will remain closed for the foreseeable future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for reservations after August (or a rare cancellation for an earlier spot),\u00a0click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/search?q=Rocky%20Mountain%20National%20Park&amp;entity_id=2907&amp;entity_type=recarea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to view availability.<\/p>\n<p>Backpackers also need to plan ahead. For information on wilderness camping, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/romo\/planyourvisit\/wild_guide.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>. And, to see if there\u2019s any last-minute availability for wilderness sites, click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/romo\/learn\/photosmultimedia\/webcams.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> to view availability by date.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri,Helvetica,sans-serif\">&#8220;Wilderness camping permits may be available depending on dates and location,&#8221; Patterson said.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>How to find camping spots in National Forest Service areas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Colorado is home to multiple national forests and national grasslands.<\/p>\n<p>Some campgrounds are open and can be reserved in advance through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Recreation.gov<\/a>. Others are available on a first-come, first-serve base. And other campgrounds remain closed due to the pandemic. And a wonderful place to do this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/parks\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado State Parks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our parks that have campgrounds and campsites are now open and available,\u201d said Rebecca Ferrell, public information and website manager for <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Parks and Wildlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Like campgrounds in national parks, campsites for the state parks can be reserved six months ahead, so it\u2019s not easy to find last-minute spots for the most popular parks on busy holiday weekends. Ferrell suggests that you consider camping during the week. You can search by the park where you want to camp or by the dates when you are free. Click <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpwshop.com\/campinghome.page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here to make a reservation<\/a>. The website also has a handy tool that allows you to look for last-minute spots. There are amazing opportunities to fish throughout the state parks. Anglers can download the <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/buyapply\/Pages\/MyCPW-App.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fishing app<\/a>. These include <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/Parks\/Chatfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chatfield<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/Parks\/cherrycreek\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cherry Creek<\/a>, which are both close to Denver. Other popular boating spots include <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/parks\/BoydLake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boyd Lake<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/parks\/StVrain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Vrain<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/parks\/BarrLake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Barr Lake<\/a>, which has a pier that\u2019s accessible for people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Two other parks with wonderful water are Steam Lake State Park and Pearl Lake State Park, which is also close to Steamboat.<\/p>\n<p>If you have a hankering to camp, but you can\u2019t find a spot at Rocky Mountain National Park, try <a href=\"https:\/\/cpw.state.co.us\/placestogo\/Parks\/stateforest\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">State Forest State Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s our largest park and it borders Rocky Mountain. It offers the same views and mountain features as Rocky and there\u2019s a reservoir there,\u201d Ferrell said.<\/p>\n<p>The park offers excellent hiking too.
