{"id":26521,"date":"2019-09-18T11:41:05","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T17:41:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/?p=26521"},"modified":"2023-12-28T14:28:09","modified_gmt":"2023-12-28T21:28:09","slug":"life-is-better-with-diabetes-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/life-is-better-with-diabetes-education\/","title":{"rendered":"Life is better with diabetes education"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Karla Norvell realized something was wrong when her hair started falling out and she inadvertently lost 40 pounds in just a few months.<\/p>\n<p>For about seven years, Norvell, 55, had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/a1c\/diagnosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prediabetes blood glucose levels<\/a>, but she wasn\u2019t able to avert the serious chronic disease. Photos by Joel Blocker, for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3><strong>A serious chronic disease<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.diabetes.org\/diabetes\/type-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Type 2 diabetes<\/a> is a condition in which the body stops using insulin properly. There are ways to help prevent it &#8211; by making lifestyle changes to control the disease \u2013 and gaining more understanding through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/events\/\">diabetes prevention program<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-callout-box col-xs-12 col-sm-6 right\" style=\"background-color:#dce4e7; color:#2e3b44;\">\n<h3><strong>Where can you find diabetes education?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Get a doctor referral<\/strong> and make an appointment at the UCHealth Diabetes and Medical Nutrition Therapy, located in the basement of UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital. Pikes Peak Ave., on Nov. 9, 2019. <\/strong>The event features education for Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes patients, &#8216;Ask the Experts&#8217; dietitian booth; A1C, kidney and eye exams; chair massages; glucose monitoring and more. The even will feature presentations by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>9:30 a.m. &#8212; Dr. Michael D. Ross, nephrologist; diabetes and kidney<\/li>\n<li>10: 20 a.m. &#8212; Dr. Roman Krivochenitser, ophthalmologist; diabetes and the eye<\/li>\n<li>11:10 a.m. &#8212; Laura Tonsits, registered dietitian; holiday eating<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPeople will think that diabetes is basically an eating disorder and if you start eating right you can cure yourself. But it\u2019s not that simple,\u201d said Stacey Fox, a diabetes nurse educator with UCHealth Diabetes and Medical Nutrition Therapy. \u201cIt\u2019s a physical and metabolic problem made more difficult by our modern-day lifestyle, where everything is at our fingertips. It is how much your body is making insulin and how it is responding to it. The body just can\u2019t overcome that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through diabetes education, Norvell began to understand how important it was for her to continue to learn about her chronic disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to take diabetes seriously,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a major thing in life \u2014 and you\u2019re going to have it your whole life. I\u2019m amazed at how many people are not informed about their diabetes because they have not sought out diabetes education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, fewer than 7% of people with Type 2 diabetes receive diabetes education in their first year after diagnosis, Fox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies and data show that when someone attends classes or diabetes education, it can result in a .6% reduction in their A1C \u2014 that\u2019s just through diabetes education alone,\u201d she said. \u201cThen of course, medication and lifestyle changes can improve that number even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Seeking diabetes education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Last year, Norvell attended the UCHealth Fall Community Diabetes Update. The half-day annual workshop, which occurs on Nov. 2 this year, provides the most recent research and information about diabetes management.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLiving well with diabetes can be a lot of work,\u201d said Susan Stauffer, a registered nurse with UCHealth Diabetes and Medical Nutrition Therapy. \u201cWe want to provide our community with the latest information and available tools that can make managing diabetes easier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Norvell, it provided more insight into a disease that is so case-by-case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have to learn what\u2019s right and what works for you,\u201d Norvell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone is different,\u201d Fox continued. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why committing these few hours to diabetes education really can make the difference long term.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event costs $15 for one person and a guest. This year Norvell said she hopes not only to attend again but also to bring a friend with diabetes, so they too can benefit from the information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe update was incredible, as it packed in a lot of information, with doctors covering all different specialties, and people asked good questions that I hadn\u2019t thought about before.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>This year\u2019s event<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The Nov. 2 event kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Sessions begin at 8 a.m., with the first talk on diabetes and heart health from UCHealth cardiologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/c-patrick-green-md-cardiology\/\">Dr. Patrick Green<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe bottom line is diabetes is a disease that can have a bad effect on blood vessels,\u201d Fox said. \u201cThat\u2019s why this year in the diabetes update we are zeroing in on diabetes and heart health, and how important it is to have good blood sugar levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"su-accordion su-u-trim\"><div class=\"su-spoiler su-spoiler-style-default su-spoiler-icon-plus su-spoiler-closed\" data-scroll-offset=\"0\" data-anchor-in-url=\"no\"><div class=\"su-spoiler-title\" tabindex=\"0\" role=\"button\"><span class=\"su-spoiler-icon\"><\/span>Attend 2019 Fall Community Diabetes Update<\/div><div class=\"su-spoiler-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\"><strong>8 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Nov. 2, 2019<\/strong> at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital\u2019s Caf\u00e9 F (basement), 1024 S. Check-in starts at 7:30 a.m.; Preregistration is required. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/events\/\">Sign up online here<\/a>, or call <strong>970.495.8777<\/strong>.<\/div><\/div><\/div>\n<p>Then, after a break for attendees to check out vendors and enjoy a snack, the update will continue with exercise physiologist Megan Willis, who will discuss how small steps toward regular exercise can have big benefits.<\/p>\n<p>Participants can ask questions of a dietitian, as well as of the expert panel during the morning\u2019s final session. This year\u2019s panel includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/richard-j-millstein-do-endocrinology\/\">Dr. Richard Millstein<\/a>, an endocrinologist, registered dietitian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/today\/preventing-type-2-diabetes\/\">Julie Gormley<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/evie-m-plummer-dpm-podiatry\/\">podiatrist Evie Plummer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe doctors have different specialties, so they\u2019re able to tell you how diabetes affects their areas,\u201d Norvell said. \u201cThere are things you would have never thought about. Diabetes education is proven to help people with diabetes to reduce complications and improve outcomes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After the 2018 event, Norvell decided she could take an even more active role in managing her diabetes and she joined the UCHealth comprehensive diabetes education program.<\/p>\n<p>This program takes patient education a step further. After she was referred to the program by her doctor, Norvell met one-on-one with a registered nurse. Then she was given the option to attend a two-day comprehensive diabetes education workshop, where she got a deep dive into the physiology of diabetes, myths and facts about the disease, information on short- and long-term complications of uncontrolled diabetes, and tips on how to prevent those complications, as well as medication options.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really get the class talking, and people begin to learn from each other,\u201d Fox said. \u201cThere are so many different pieces to the puzzle that it\u2019s really up to the person living with diabetes to find the pieces that really connect and work for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The second day is all about nutrition and its impact. Participants learn about food groups and how they influence blood sugar levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t had to make huge sacrifices,\u201d Norvell said. \u201cPeople have the wrong idea that you can\u2019t enjoy anything. It\u2019s just about being smart, and you need to learn what that means for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople feel less overwhelmed and gain more self-confidence when they receive diabetes education,\u201d Fox said. \u201cThis is not a \u2018Lone Ranger\u2019 disease.
