Chuck and Suzi Mitchell describe their 14-year-old daughter, Kristina, as someone with a huge heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s very kind and funny,\u201d said Suzi. \u201cShe\u2019s passionate about animals and goes out of her way to help people.\u201d<\/p>\n

But a few months ago, it was Kristina asking for help.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said, \u2018Mom, please help, I can\u2019t stand this,\u2019 \u201d recalled Suzi. \u201cWe knew then that it was time to explore other treatment options for her chronic sinusitis.\u201d<\/p>\n

Impacting more than breathing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Kristina had dealt with chronic sinusitis for years. Pain, discomfort, headaches.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost mornings, I woke up with a blocked nose,\u201d she said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t run for long distances. I also had really bad ear pain, and I felt like I always had a headache.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was starting to impact her life,\u201d said Chuck. \u201cShe kept having headaches and was missing school because she couldn\u2019t focus. She started to struggle a bit. Going over the pass was difficult with the pressure changes and how it made her head and ears feel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The condition started to have social impacts, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe noticed her being at home a little more,\u201d said Suzi. \u201cShe was spending more time feeling unwell instead of being with her friends. There started to be fewer invitations to friends\u2019 houses and sleepovers because they knew there was a good chance she\u2019d start to not feel well or would need to leave early.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the last 18 months, it got to the point of monthly visits to the pediatrician\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe tried every over the counter and prescription option possible. Dr. [Sheila] Fountain<\/a> couldn\u2019t keep her on antibiotics any longer,\u201d recalls Suzi. \u201cAllergy testing didn\u2019t lead to anything. Even nebulizer treatments didn\u2019t help.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was about that time that Fountain learned of the impending arrival of Dr. Jason Sigmon<\/a>, an otolaryngologist, at UCHealth Ear, Nose and Throat Clinic in Steamboat Springs<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA referral to an ENT for surgical evaluation is appropriate if the patient\u2019s symptoms are refractory, or not responding, to treatment; if swelling in the nasal passages is severe enough to create obstruction; or polyps are suspected,\u201d said Fountain. \u201cKristina met the first two criteria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kristina ended up being one of Sigmon\u2019s first patients. After learning of her medical history and continued struggle with sinusitis, he recommended a CT scan.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was important to understand if there were any anatomic or functional sinus changes that might be contributing to Kristina\u2019s sinus and nasal symptoms,\u201d said Sigmon.<\/p>\n

Following the scan, Sigmon recommended 3D image-guided sinus surgery, something he had performed for 14 years at a previous hospital. While the surgery had been performed at YVMC in the past, the 3D aspect was a first.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was experiencing so much discomfort and pain, we said, \u2018Let\u2019s do it,\u2019\u201d said Suzi. \u201cKristina wanted it. She wanted to be out of pain.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guiding the way<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After discussing the option of surgery, the family agreed it was the necessary next step.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was very nervous,\u201d said Kristina. \u201cI didn\u2019t know if it would work and if it would be worth it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The day before the surgery, Kristina had another CT scan to see if there had been any changes since the first scan.<\/p>\n

On the morning of the procedure, Kristina and her parents arrived at YVMC.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel really strongly about trying to use local doctors and medical services,\u201d said Suzi. \u201cWe\u2019ve lived here a long time and always try to have things done here if possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once in the OR, Sigmon used a \u201cpencil\u201d to trace an imaginary mask around Kristina\u2019s eyes and nose. That mask then electronically matched up with the CT scans, giving Sigmon a very clear view of Kristina\u2019s sinus cavity and the area in which he needed to perform the procedure.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 3D component is incredibly helpful,\u201d said Sigmon. \u201cIt allows me to more safely navigate to the sinuses while protecting the eyes and brain structures during surgery. Recovery is quicker and less painful as it doesn\u2019t require painful packing in the nose.\u201d<\/p>\n

The procedure went well, and after a few hours in recovery, Kristina was discharged home the same day.<\/p>\n

<\/h3>\n

Inhale, exhale<\/strong><\/h3>\n

More horseback riding and sleepovers with friends top the list of things Kristina is anxious to do.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of dirt and dust in the arena, so I couldn\u2019t be in there long,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m not so worried about getting a migraine at a sleepover and having to go home early.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chuck and Suzi continue to monitor Kristina\u2019s recovery at home, following a post-op appointment with Dr. Sigmon.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re glad Dr. Sigmon is in our medical community now,\u201d said Suzi. \u201cAnd we\u2019re glad our daughter is on the road to being able to breathe easier.\u201d<\/p>\n
