Photo by Jen Ross for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Enough with being polite.<\/p>\n<p>Jessica Mendoza had to push her way into the all-male box as the first female Major League Baseball analyst for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ESPN<\/a> and host of <em>Sunday Night Baseball<\/em> with baseball legend, Alex Rodriguez.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza advises other women to fight for what they want too.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza spoke Saturday at the UCHealth women\u2019s event, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/extraordinary\/evre-health-fitness-day-every-woman\/\">evr\u0113,<\/a> where she was asked her how she made it in a man\u2019s world without being labeled as a \u201cbi*** or controlling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am me. I battled it. I was pushy and I\u2019m labeled,\u201d Mendoza said.<\/p>\n<p>Still, she forges ahead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat does my gender have anything to do with my words or my goals?\u201d she said. \u201cI just see it as silliness.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A dad who molded a fierce girl<\/h3>\n<p>Fittingly, Mendoza made her remarks about pushing into male-dominated territory on a practice field that usually is\u00a0full of big, burly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.denverbroncos.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Denver Broncos<\/a> players. He was a baseball and football coach at southern California high schools and at Moorpark College north of Los Angeles. Jessica hung out at practices and always was surrounded by male athletes. Her dad ran plenty of practices for his kids too, teaching them how to hit, field balls and play shortstop and in the outfield. Even time at the beach turned into practice sessions. Gil Mendoza would send tennis balls flying into the air. The kids had to guess where the balls would land and run out to that spot. If the balls landed on them, they got ice cream, Jessica Mendoza once told the <em>Ventura County Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For her, being fierce comes naturally.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza went on to play softball at Stanford University, where she was a four-time, first team All American. She then won gold and silver medals respectively at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics in Athens and Beijing. Always an outstanding\u00a0hitter, Mendoza has brought that same competitive drive to broadcasting.<\/p>\n<p>She\u00a0said women don\u2019t need to be humble or polite, constantly thanking bosses for opportunities. Instead, she said women should set their sights high, raise their voices and seize chances to succeed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t go through life without speaking up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>&#8216;My voice matters&#8217;<\/h3>\n<p>Mendoza fought for her spot in the booth for years.<\/p>\n<p>She said her bosses never refused her outright, but kept making excuses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said, \u2018people are going to say bad things\u2019 about me. That made me want to fight more. I am the only female in the room all the time and most of the time, I don\u2019t notice. They do,\u201d Mendoza said.<\/p>\n<p>She refuses to listen to critics who focus on her gender. Instead, she works to be the most prepared commentator in the booth, rigorously studying for every broadcast so she can give fans what they want: top-notch analysis.<\/p>\n<p>Mendoza got her first shot in the booth in August of 2015 for a game between the Cardinals and the Diamondbacks. Photo by Jen Ross for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The matchup that night between the Cubs and the Dodgers wasn\u2019t supposed to be an attention-grabbing game, but Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta threw a no-hitter and Mendoza dazzled the audience as a standout voice in the booth.<\/p>\n<p>Twitter blew up. There were plenty of sexist trolls who attacked Mendoza.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI heard a woman\u2019s voice and it\u2019s a men\u2019s sport,\u201d Mendoza recalled hearing.<\/p>\n<p>The reaction ranged from positive to deranged: \u201c\u2018This is amazing,\u2019 and, \u2018Oh my God, I want to kill you,\u2019\u201d Mendoza said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe geographic change of me moving from the field to the booth, I didn\u2019t even realize the storm that would create,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>To stay centered, Mendoza listened to those she respected \u2013 experienced sports broadcasters and fellow athletes she long has admired. And she tunes out the haters.<\/p>\n<p>In January of 2016, ESPN rewarded her with a permanent slot on <em>Sunday Night Baseball<\/em>. Mendoza had pushed and clinched her dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy voice matters and I know it\u2019s good,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>At home with her husband and two sons, Mendoza disconnects from social media whenever she gets the chance and loves disappearing on long walks.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The power of disconnecting<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The importance of disconnecting was a big theme during evr\u0113.<\/p>\n<p>Joining Mendoza as a keynote panelist was Amy Jo Martin, a social media pioneer who taught celebrities like Shaquille O\u2019Neal and Dwayne \u2018The Rock\u2019 Johnson how to humanize their social media feeds.<\/p>\n<p>Martin is the author of the <em>New York Times<\/em> bestseller, <em>Renegades Write the Rules<\/em> and hosts the podcast, <em>Why Not Now?<\/em> While Martin loves nurturing other young female entrepreneurs, she also shared her darkest moments and warned of burnout.<\/p>\n<p>During her peak years, Martin said she was averaging about four hours of sleep a night as she raced around the country, taking about 210 flights a year. Her business was thriving. She had employees around the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looked great from the outside,\u201d Martin said.<\/p>\n<p>But on the inside, she was falling apart.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy marriage and health were on the rocks,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She found herself at John F. Kennedy Airport and couldn\u2019t remember for a moment where she was flying. She grabbed a cup of coffee to pump herself up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go to sign my receipt and I couldn\u2019t remember my name,\u201d Martin said. \u201cIt was one of the most powerful moments of my life. I was completely out of gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martin disconnected completely, spent extended time on a sailboat and the Wyoming native now lives in South Dakota, where she sometimes sees more animals than people each day. She meditates regularly, has slowed down dramatically and now is expecting her first baby.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI found another way. I learned to sleep again and meditate. There is a middle way,\u201d Martin said. \u201cYou can be a badass with pace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When women live more balanced lives, Martin said, the \u201chustle turns into more play. It becomes a dance instead of a fight or a struggle. I\u2019ve been trying to dance more,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3>Women must prioritize themselves<\/h3>\n<p>To help women focus more on themselves, evr\u0113 included fitness classes, healthy foods and a session with goal coach, Jacki Carr.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used to think self care was a luxury,\u201d Carr told the women.<\/p>\n<p>But, she now tells women that they must prioritize themselves. Photo by Jen Ross for UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In an echo chamber of celebrity and social media culture, women sometimes get caught up in what others are doing or achieving.<\/p>\n<p>Carr said women should instead focus on what makes them feel strong. If you\u2019re an introvert, be alone. If service matters to you, make that a priority.<\/p>\n<p>In order to stick with a path that matters to you, write down your goals, Carr said.<\/p>\n<p>A meaningful goal must be specific and must include a date by which you\u2019ll achieve it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy? We make it happen and we scare ourselves a bit,\u201d Carr said.<\/p>\n<p>She checks in on her goals at the start of each new season. Others check in once a month on the day they were born. It\u2019s important to reassess goals. If you haven\u2019t achieved a goal and it\u2019s no longer relevant, nix it. If the goal still matters, but you haven\u2019t achieved it, create a new due date. And get back to making it happen.<\/p>\n<p>For one young woman at the event, meeting one of her heroes was a bonus of attending evr\u0113.<\/p>\n<p>Elisa Davis of Denver used to play softball. After Mendoza spoke, she went up to meet her and asked if she could give her a hug. She told the softball star that when she was younger, she and her friends used to pretend to be Mendoza. If they were facing a tough opponent they would tell each other they planned to \u201cMendoza\u201d the ball, their term for smacking a big hit.<\/p>\n<p>Davis told Mendoza that whenever critics are trying to cut her down, she should block them out and instead think of all her young fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are lots of little girls out there who are pretending to be you,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Enough with being polite.
