Photo by Ken Papaleo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Stewart and her husband, Andy, went in for a routine ultrasound when she was 20 weeks pregnant They were thrilled to find out whether they were having a boy or a girl.<\/p>\n<p>They learned their baby was a boy and they planned to name him Logan. But devastating news came as well. Their baby had a fatal disease called <a href=\"https:\/\/ghr.nlm.nih.gov\/condition\/osteogenesis-imperfecta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">osteogenesis imperfecta or OI Type 2<\/a>.\u00a0It\u2019s also known as brittle bone disease and Logan would almost certainly die in utero or soon after birth.<\/p>\n<p>The excitement of having their first child soon turned to sorrow. Photo by Ken Papaleo.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At 27 weeks, Stewart\u2019s water broke and her doctors sent her to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-university-of-colorado-hospital-uch\/\">UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital<\/a> since her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/womens-care\/pregnancy-childbirth-newborn-care\/high-risk-pregnancy\/\">pregnancy was deemed high risk<\/a>. Logan arrived on Aug. 9 of 2012.<\/p>\n<p>The Stewarts weren\u2019t sure Logan would survive the birth, but he did. They cuddled with him as long as possible and took photos to honor and remember their son.<\/p>\n<p>While they received excellent support from family, friends and their church community, the Stewarts yearned for help from other parents who had been through the unimaginable grief of losing a baby.<\/p>\n<p>To create the support network they wish they could have had, the Stewarts and Jamie\u2019s sister, Kelly Kuhn, created a non-profit called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.walkwithme-nonprofit.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walk With Me<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Walk With Me helps families heal through an array of services including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monthly support groups.<\/li>\n<li>Assistance accessing therapy.<\/li>\n<li>In-hospital care packages.<\/li>\n<li>Memorial trees so families have a living memory of a baby who has died.<\/li>\n<li>Casts of infant footprints.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Stewart recently\u00a0returned for the first time to the hospital where Logan was born to provide another gift for grieving parents.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20446\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20446\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/21092226\/Cuddle-cot-6-picture-of-the-cuddle-cot-tiny.webp\" alt=\"photo shows a device called a Cuddle Cot. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She, her sister and Walk With Me family advocate, Amber Chardavoyne, gave University of Colorado Hospital a special cooling bassinet called a <a href=\"http:\/\/flexmort.com\/cuddle-cots\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cuddle Cot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A baby\u2019s body can decompose quickly after death, reducing the amount of time parents can spend with their infant. The Cuddle Cot pumps cold water through coils in pads that cool the body and preserve it longer to give parents more time.<\/p>\n<p>The Cuddle Cot\u2019s manufacturers in the U.K. says studies show that families can handle infant loss better if they are able to spend more time with their baby and begin to grieve.<\/p>\n<p>Aubrey Becker, prenatal loss coordinator for University of Colorado Hospital, teared up when the women delivered the Cuddle Cot. She said it will be incredibly valuable for families who lose babies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur main focus is compassionate care and focusing on making memories,\u201d Becker said. \u201cTime is very important and there\u2019s never enough of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Typically, parents spend about 24 to 72 hours in the hospital after a birth. In the past, when an infant died, at a certain point, the caregivers had to take the\u00a0baby&#8217;s body\u00a0to the morgue. Photo by UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful gift,\u201d Becker said.<\/p>\n<p>Cuddle Cots cost about $3,000 each and Walk With Me hopes to provide one for every hospital in Colorado. The gift to University of Colorado marked the third in Colorado for Walk With Me.<\/p>\n<p>Like Stewart, Chardavoyne also lost a son. Mason was born on Jan. 7, 2009 and lived for five days. He had a chromosomal condition called Trisomy 18. When you have a sick or dying child, you are unable to protect them.
