Living in West Tisbury, a town located on Martha\u2019s Vineyard, they\u2019re surrounded by beautiful scenery.<\/p>\n<p>With a cousin in Steamboat Springs and an open invitation for the last few years, they took their hiking shoes westward in October 2018.<\/p>\n<p>But before they left, Phyllis, a personal trainer, realized an infection in her finger was getting worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was inconsequential,\u201d she said. \u201cI kept thinking it would go away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it didn\u2019t \u2013 it kept getting worse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy the time we got to Steamboat, the sleepless nights were starting to add up due to the pain,\u201d said Phyllis. \u201cI told Richard, \u2018I think we need to go to the emergency department.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>\u2018Beautiful experience\u2019<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When Phyllis and Richard arrived at the emergency department at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-yampa-valley-medical-center\/\">UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center<\/a>, Phyllis was put under the care of registered nurse Craig Russell and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/laila-w-powers-md\/\">Dr. Laila Powers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was treated with courtesy and professionalism,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was such a relief to me to have made the decision to get the finger attended to and, of course, to be treated with such excellent service.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to intervene early with infections, before it has the chance to worsen to the point of requiring IV antibiotics or even operative intervention,\u201d said Dr. Powers.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20191\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20191\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-20191\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/09163459\/Arches-National-Park-in-Moab-UT.-Day-after-going-to-the-hospital..webp\" alt=\"In this photo, Phyllis stands in the middle of Arches National Park.\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/09163459\/Arches-National-Park-in-Moab-UT.-Day-after-going-to-the-hospital..webp 480w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/09163459\/Arches-National-Park-in-Moab-UT.-Day-after-going-to-the-hospital.-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/09163459\/Arches-National-Park-in-Moab-UT.-Day-after-going-to-the-hospital.-113x150.webp 113w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2019\/01\/09163459\/Arches-National-Park-in-Moab-UT.-Day-after-going-to-the-hospital.-200x267.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Phyllis in Arches National Park, the day after a visit to the emergency department at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center. Photo courtesy of Phyllis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dr. Powers determined that the infection needed to be drained out of Phyllis\u2019 finger. After explaining to Phyllis what was going to happen, the quick procedure \u2013 an incision, draining and sutures \u2013 took place. Powers gave Phyllis a prescription for antibiotics to prevent further infection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were out the door and down the road to Moab before we knew it,\u201d said Phyllis. \u201cThis could have ruined our trip, but everything worked out quite well.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Hometown feel<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>West Tisbury has a population of 2,898, according to 2017 census data. Being from a small town, Phyllis said she knows firsthand the importance a hospital plays in small communities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s one hospital on the entire island of Martha\u2019s Vineyard,\u201d she said. \u201cSteamboat is almost like an island, too, being some distance from Denver. I know how important a facility like this is to the public. It\u2019s important to have care available when you need it, and compassionate care at that, which was certainly what I felt there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With her finger now healed, Phyllis was glad she heeded the advice she often gives her clients \u2013 don\u2019t procrastinate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m thankful I went in when I did,\u201d she said, \u201cand I\u2019m thankful everything went well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Phyllis and her husband, Richard, love to hike and be outdoors.
